Strobelite Honeycomb

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Apart from Busta’s monstrous verse, Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win (Remix)” is a as useless as the original mix. It’s still unclear who actually listens to these never ending hobbled together posse cuts or how there piling all these star rappers onto a minor hit and showcase for a fat DJ is at all profitable. But points go to Rick <ahem> Row-Zay for name dropping the “my Honeycomb Hideout is made of all glass” line.

If you weren’t alive in the 80s (insert requisite Ross-is-old joke) was a reference to the old Honeycomb cereal commercials above. The Honeycomb Hideout was a go-to rap reference at one point, probably because it rolls off the tongue and suggests some sort of top secret hangout where crimes can be committed (insert requisite Ross-was-a-CO joke) and honeys can be seduced (insert requisite Ross-is-a-virgin-probably joke). It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anybody rap about Honeycomb Hideouts and this is okay because it really isn’t a very good cereal. But hit the jump anyway to check a for no reason, biting ass Ego Trip style list of five classic and not-classic Honeycomb Hideout rapp lines. (more…)

from Whores In This House 12″ (Deco, 1993)

Maybe this is outside the scope of Cocainebluntsism but I was surprised to find this alternate mix of Frank Ski’s Baltimore Club classic “Whores In This House” that actually featured pretty good rapping on it. Ski, also the architect of “Doo Doo Brown,” actually hails from Miami but his records somehow ended up being a major blueprint for mid-atlantic party music.

Can anybody recommend any other Club records that have competent fast rapping? Is this a common thing? All I hear on the radio and at parties is endless chants about breasts and whatnot. Is there a heepster conspiracy to suppress actual rapping?

And hit the jump for the Memphis/Bmore crossover you’ve waited your entire life for. (*Update and a Bay Area/Pack/Lil B link, as well! All the dots are connecting. Via Pilly Wonk) (more…)

Pill – “Glass”
from 4075: The Refill (Mixtape, Coming Soon)

Pill went and got himself a budget. The 4th ward representative turned gray lady golden boy‘s latest video explores a lot of the same themes that “Trap Going Ham” did, but the track itself is more sober. Suddenly it’s not about the madness of the hood, but the pain. “Trap” was a cool record but “Glass” is more indicative of what makes Pill a likable emcee – thoughtful, reflective and slightly spiritual. Not just go ham madness.

from Play Me Sum Pimpin Pt. 2 (Mixtape, Coming Soon)

I’ve been listening to a lot of mid-90s M-Town tapes as of late, inspired both by a sudden blog revival and a four month late tape order from Tommy Wright’s ebay store. One thing I’m noticing is how much of an influence New Orleans bounce was having on Memphis at the time. The idea I got when I was interviewing these dudes a few years ago was that it was a simultaneous evolution. To hear the tapes speak (and tapes do speak) Memphis was more informed by New Orleans than the other way around. (And then Atlanta stole from both! I kid, but I don’t.) Juice’s old Vol. 9 tape is about halfway to being my Bounce For Relief compilation – a slowed down “Get The Gat,” etc. That influence trickles down to “Twerk”, from the “twerk dat ass” refrain to a full fledged Triggerman breakdown. But one of the great things about Three 6, even on those early tapes, is that they never let their influences overpower their sound. It ends up a loose hybrid between late 90s Cash Money and early 00ts Hypnotize. They are really having the best year ever, by the way. (A version of “Twerk” with Webbie was floating around a while back. I guess this is the official mix.) (more…)
