Pookey Blow
Pookey Blow – “Get Up (And Go To School)“
from Get Up & Go To School 12″ (Tri State, 1980)
also available on The Third Unheard Compilation (Stones Throw, 2004)
The Awesome Threesome – “Lookin’ Good“
from Lookin’ Good 12″ (Alexis, 1988)
Just in case you thought kiddie rappers were exclusively a 90s phenomenon, here’s two joints that book ended the 80s.
Pookie Blow was the 12 year old nephew of New Haven semi star Mr. Magic. He was conceptualized as being the unofficial younger brother to Kurtis, despite having no relation (familial or otherwise). This bongo & kazoo banger is one of Pookey’s two cuts. I’d give you more details, but the egon & the stones throw crew really covered that shit perfectly.
And in case you were wondering (RAP NERD TIME!), the version on the Stones Throw comp is edited. This is the slightly longer 12″ version, giving you like another thirty seconds of the closing vamp. Not sure why this was left off the reissue, but maybe it’s because of the more obvious Herman Kelley interpolation? I think that qualifies as yet ANOTHER COCAINE BLUNTS EXCLUSIVE CLUESIVE SIVE SIVE IVE IVE IVE!
The Awesome Threesome come straight out of Churchill, VA (we’re all over the map today) and are admittedly pretty terrible. I have no clue what their story is, but I do know that whiney voices just don’t go well with their Run DMC inspired hardcore style. It’s especially hilarious when the one kid tries to beatbox.
