This is the series where we check terrestrial radio charts to see what independent records they have been adding to the playlist. The idea is that it will help shine some light on semi-significant songs that slip below the blogosphere. And figure out whose payolaing which payholes. But really it just amounts to me making fun of youtube clips.

Video: Jay Electronica – “Google Eyes” (Live)

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

The only Jay that matters anymore (with respect to Jay Rock and uh Jazzy Jay) goes in on that infamous Pacewon/”Shady Blues” loop. The great thing about Jay Electronica is how he’s taken the opposite approach to the blog circuit carpet bombers by not releasing anything at all. We’ve gotten, what, three full, finished tracks in the last two years? This creates a purer buzz, a kind of tape trading buzz from another era. He’s on some Ras Kass demo tape type buzz. Fans might not ever hear a completed version of this track, but trust that this lo-fi live rip will sit in their itunes forever. Incredible song title, too. It further confirms my theory that Jay E was born to collaborate with Lil B. (via Rap Radar)

Cyssero f/ Beanie Sigel – “Let’s Talk About It

After an extended silence Beans has been hitting the guest spot rounds pretty hard lately. Here he passes one of his subdued, Scarface style hood landscape verses off to Cyssero. Cyssero is one of the more notable Philly dudes that’s always being filmed freestyling forever in front of carry outs, for those of you who don’t pay attention to these things.

CunninLynguists f/ Khujo Goodie & Killer Mike – “Georgia (Remix)

I’ve always had mixed feelings about CL. Their production is pretty impeccable and they seem really earnest in their passion for all things Dungeon, still there’s a sort of a tacky old time revue feel to it. HITS IN THE STYLE OF GOODIE MOB. So there’s a real Hall/Oats/Kendricks/Ruffin thing about whenever they bring those guys in for guest appearances. It’s a nice gesture, but still feels a little empty. Specifically the language of the “clay is running red” refrain sounds like somebody trying really hard to imitate a late in the album Outkast track and not quite hitting the mark. But I’m not going to complain about Khujo & Killer rapping. CL just need to channel that DF influence into a more original voice. And a better name (you already know!) (more…)

New Rap Music

I’m home sick today (differentiated from my “home healthy” days only by how guilty I feel about procrastination) and decided to post some new rap music.

from Liquor Store Mascot (Coming Soon)
As B.O.B. moves further into space rapping and not-rapping territory his vastly underrated homie and hypeman Playboy Tre keeps getting closer and closer to RAP RAP purism. “Bleachers” breathes off palm to the lunch table simplicity.

from Fresh Cuts Vol. 3: Music By Guitar Center Employeees (Guitar Center? 2008)

Update: Final mix is up there now. Beat has a fuller/cleaner sound that one might expect from JB.

My favorite backpack rapper with my least favorite rap name returns after an extended hiatus. It’s probably smart of Jay, in an era of drop-a-freestyle-to-the-blogs-every-six-minute inbox cloggers, to be so conservative in what he releases. I’m pretty sure this track is the only official track we’ve heard from him since his press buzz really starting bubbling and he delayed (aborted?) the Act 3 ep that was scheduled for last xmas.

He could probably relax the Nas fetish just a little bit (Lil’ Elt, on the other hand…), but otherwise this is real solid. Just Blaze is on the boards for this and its a surprisingly mellow affair. I was hoping something closer to “I’m Talking To You” for their first collab but I’ll take this over that old “Numa Numa” bullshit any day.
