It’s been a long time. Some of these are older than others.

from I’m Here (Mixtape, 2010)

The success of Chalies’ “I Look Good” is a blessing and a curse. It got him a deal and probably a decent amount of loot but being such a lightweight and summer record it’s pretty safe to assume that he’ll be burdened with a one hit wonder branding, which couldn’t be further from the truth (this is often the case with hip hop – ask Biz Markie and the Geto Boys). If nothing else it’s a big part of the reason we’ve been hearing booming Moe/Pat style hooks on post-snap records like “Hit Dat Hoe.” But the thing about both those guys and Chalie is that they were not just hookmen in the traditional sense. They were rappers first. His freebee street album I’m Here is a little bit everywhere, some great spitting, some straight up R&B/pop records and a lot of hybrids. He could probably carve a niche for himself a The-Dream style singer/songwriter mold which would be a good look professionally, but almost a let down musically. It’s when he hits that hybrid moment that he’s at his best, but I’m not sure how much of a market there is for that right now.

Ms. No Tonsels – “Fuck My Face

If retweetabilism is any indicator “Fuck My Face” is well on its way to up to be the 2010 “Smell Yo Dick.” Except it’s actually a pretty good song. Or at least it’s as good as a song called “Fuck My Face” can possibly be. Strip club shit. Ms. No Tonsels(sic) is something like a cross between old style Trina sass and new school Nicki Minaj robot rap. This is record that needs a Ludacris verse on the remix. A tip of the hat to David the Shrimp for mentioning this record and then asking for a “hat tip” in this post. (more…)

Fugees f/ Outsidaz – “Cowboys”

Call me crazy, but I consider the Outz to be one of my favorite rap groups of all time. They’re a top 5 private mind garden selection on the right day. Their hyper pronounced multi-syllabic flows were memorized by the few of us lucky enough to be jamming their tapes and brought Eminem coming out of his I-Wish-I-Was-AZ shell. Plus, like their big brother Reggie Noble, their sense of humor was so distinctively Jersey that maybe you had to have grown up in that state to really understand their off kilter punchlines. (Sometimes Gucci Mane seems like a spiritual descendant of that dumb dope style. Remember when Zee was licking icicles off bitches nipples in igloos and such?)

In my book they rank maybe just a rung lower than the Dungeon, Wu, Natives, etc. in the pantheon of great rap crews. Really the only thing preventing them from being truly great was that they never got a chance to cut those classic albums that they definitely had in their brains somewhere. Blame it on the politics of the business or blame it on the ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-acid tabs. Whatever the case they did manage to make a gang load of great singles (and demos). Here are just a few. I didn’t even know there were clips for “I’m Leavin” and “Money”. Not their best songs, admittedly, but I’m posting them in the name of completism. (more…)

Posse Revival: Whitey On The Moon

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Did you hear that Eminem has a new album dropping tomorrow? It probably warrants a mention, since so many of these media outlets will likely overlook it. But because I, like Marshall, am too lazy to actually come up with new ideas, I am instead reupping this lost post on rap whiteness. It originally ran on 7/6/06 as part of the since self destructed Posse On Blogway column at the other site, so forgive my inability to predict a future where an Asher Roth exists. (more…)
