Pharoahe Monch – “The Healer (Freestyle)

Yamasuki – “Kono Samourai

from Le Monde Fabuleux Des Yamasuki (Belter, 1971)

With all respect to Homebwoi, Badu’s dub massacre “The Healer” may quite possibly be the best record of 2008. I would’ve almost certainly expected to to loathe a Madlib produced screed on hip hop’s livelihood that involves the phrase “rastafari fire”, but somehow it works. Very well. And despite a few career missteps, Pharoahe Monch remains one of the greatest rappers to ever walk this green earth. This is a live recording of him spitting a short verse over “The Healer” @ SOB’s this past Wednesday. To further reveal my invisible kufi, I also posted the break, yo! Yamasuki was a faux-Japano psych record from a Frenchman who later fathered one half of Daft Punk.

I jacked the Monch audio from that website where I steal all my ideas.

say what you want about Madlib, but he does whatever the fuck he wants. And if you’ve worked in the media or entertainment biz, which you have, than no matter what you think about a man’s style, you have to respect his ability to be himself in a world filled with shit-eating shills.

oh and, on the Plastic Ono tip, I do agree with Nas’s sentiments but…how come Mccartney gets no respect? I mean, he produced some funky ass records that are severely underappreciated, for example:

Publics, Paul’s solo work isn’t as awful as everyone says but it’s pretty mawkish stuff by and large. I do like that song you posted though.

And on the poll, I just want to put in a plug for ABN. We know Bun, Wayne, and Nas will disappoint, I’m a little skeptical about a Big Boi solo set – Z-Ro and Trae have put out some great albums the last 5 years and I think of all the rappers out there, they have as much of a chance of putting out a classic one day as anyone, literally. Unfortunately I fear mediocre beats will hold them back, but you never know.

WHATS WRONG WITH MADLIB? HOW COULD YOU “LOATHE” HIM? HE MAKES BETTER MUSIC THAN 88% PERCENT OF THE BULLSHIT CB POST.
