Two joints from Boosie’s new tape Da Beginning. You already know I’m a sucker for the soulful side of Trill Ent, and their production team is rapidly growing into that sound while simultaneously making gang loads of money with their ignorant pop rap moves. I respect that. Boosie Bad Azz even gets a little… dare I say it?… political on “Dirty World.” Though “little kids can’t count to ten / but they can spell Lil’ Boosie’s name” is probably not something to brag about, as he does on “Donkey.”

Do you believe that it’s possible for a rapper to have such a grating voice that, regardless of how technically skilled he is, he can’t be considered a good rapper? Or maybe you can acknowledge that he can rap but you still can’t stand to listen to him? And if so, what rappers would you say fall into that category? Because I can’t imagine anyone with a worse voice than Boosie.

I love Boosie’s voice…I hated it when I first heard it on Do The Ratchet but it really grew on me.. He’s definetly one of the greatest out right now, that Donkey joint is hotfire

I don’t find Boosie’s voice annoying. I hear him as a direct descendant of Eazy E->Pimp C mixed with like Flava Flav or something. I am glad you admit he’s technically skilled though, Tray. He is definitely one of the greatest out right now.
Budden’s voice is annoying though I’m pretty sure I’ve only claimed this once, not always.

Well maybe the fact that you listen to Crystal Castles at all suggests that you should stick with that instead of rap.
And Joe Budden does have an annoying voice. It’s not even that his voice is annoying, he just doesn’t have a good voice, it’s not trained for music…it just sounds like some totally random dude recording his raps. I tried burning his CD and bumping it in the car but it just didn’t happen, I felt like I was listening to some demo some guy online made me download.

Noz – on point once again. Been down with Boosie ever since he smashed Banner’s last great moment ‘Ain’t Got Nothing’ and yeah, Trill is slowly creeping up as the latest great Southern label. Especially on the production side.

Yeah BR Budden’s voice is annoying in a musical/rapping context. I wouldn’t be bothered by, say, voicemails from Budden, which is the kind of annoying that I think Boosie’s detractors are suggesting. Does that make sense?
I once read a message board comment that described Boosie’s voice as (paraphrasing) “the kid in high school who is screaming in the hallway for no apparent reason while everyone else is already in class.” That’s pretty apt but rappers are *supposed* to be that kid sometimes. That kid always entertained me. Even when I was “teaching.”

Budden’s voice is annoying, yes. Budden’s also a pretty talented rapper. Way more so than Boosie. Who I didn’t concede was technically skilled, though I’ll admit he’s not technically incompetent. Anyway, Boosie’s voice… it’s similar to Eazy’s, but Eazy had a great voice, and Boosie’s is just too high-pitched. He sounds like a chipmunked soul sample. Or a talking squirrel. Or someone who just inhaled a ton of helium. Or Trina.

I find Trina’s voice annoying too, but (a) Boosie’s is way worse, and (b) Boosie is a man, so he shouldn’t sound like a woman or a preubescent male. I mean, maybe in the 22nd century we’ll have openly gay effeminate rappers and that’ll be seen as a great thing, but as Prodigy would say, “NO YA TIME IS NOT HERE YET.”

No, no, he went from “sounds like… Trina” (where’d “a little like” come from?) to “sound[s] like a woman.” Pretty logical – Trina is a woman and he sounds like her, so therefore, he sounds like a woman. The “openly gay effeminate rappers and that’ll be seen as a great thing” is just, you know, a scenario in which it would be okay for male rappers to sound like women. I wouldn’t say that Boosie’s effeminate, much less openly gay, he just sounds like a woman or a 9-year-old boy/donkey hybrid.
