Trance Rap Antidote

The Roots f/ Dice Raw, Jazzy Jeff & Peedi Crakk- “Get Busy”
from Rising Down (Def Jam, 2008)

Black thought is still sort of bo****, I hear he’s hard at work on his specialist rhyming dictionary of poetically licensed -al suffixes. Peedi is still a little dusted and/or disgusted (in a good way, I think). Jazzy Jeff is still the best DJ alive. And Dice Raw still has the best lisp since G Rap. But that beat. That damn beat. The direction Quest n’ em are taking this record is really interesting, bringing those Rick Rubin hard synth as sort of a kick in the groin to lilly fairy trance rap. Synths are not just for arpeggiated rave girl bliss. You can start fights to them too. Ask Paul & Juice.

When will BT ever shut up about how “my city isn’t like your city, I’m from the iladelph, blah blah blah blah”? He’s about as much of a philadelphian as I am. We’re probably next-door neighbors and I don’t even realize it. (I’m from the suburbs.) I just find it really vacuous. If you want to go the conscious rapper route, don’t try to boost your cred with incessant references to “your” city’s crime rate.

And that Princess song is stuck on my head. She’s very dull on it though. I liked her on Circles and things, but here she just sounds half-asleep.

This song is a yawn but the rest of the album is pretty damn dope. I fucks with Black Thought as a rapper, even though his flow hasn’t changed since 1996.

Are these guys going to be doing this cornball garbage when they’re in their 60s? Audience: the two disgruntled mailmen still left working the outskirts of Keepinitrealzville. Check back in 5 years for the answer.
