Well Connected

It would seem hip hop graphs are the new Cross Colors. I just copped an all over print pie chart hoodie. But Jamphat’s got nothing on this guy. I stumbled upon MIT student Reginald Smith’s research site via google. Entitled “The network of collaboration among rappers and it’s community structure” (.pdf), he traces the interconnectivity of more than 5,000 collaborating rappers (culled from the ever so accurate ohhla.com). I’m not entirely sure what Smith is looking to prove (presumably it’s just a way to show off his community network tracking methods). But it’s an admirable and interesting effort, sort of the academic equivalent of writing down all the words to “Rappers Delight” and pinning it to the inside of the sleeve.

Kurupt’s sort of a wild card in the top ten, huh? Bear in mind, this data was compiled in late 2005. I’m pretty sure Lil’ Wayne has knocked out 246 guest spots in the time it took me to write this post.

Interesting kind of a flip of “six degrees of separation”

scientifical madness!
this is cool stuff, and i’m parsing the ohhla lyrics myself these days.
his first example on scientific fallacies is flawed though. yes, some people conflate red dot laser-sights with infrared but there also is such a thing as an infrared lasersight and it does create an infrared dot. it’s only visible for someone looking with infrared vision though (typically via a scope or set of goggles).

Although I’ll take him on a hook over the other two, I find it hard to believe that Z-Ro’s had more guests spots than either R. Kelly or Pharrell.

This guy doesn’t always do rap but when he does he’s the best.
