On That 635

U Know Who – “Bo And Ho
from We Rock The House 12″ (Wemix, 1988)

In addition to the tasteful Keisha shot on the cover, there’s a ‘regional rap’ theme to the new issue of Vibe. I contributed a short thing on the chronically overlooked Dallas scene, in which I talk to Tum Tum, Country Boi and the legendary DJ Snake, who we’ve talked about here in the past. I know most of my internet savvy folkers are above print magazine reading, but this issue is definitely worth a waiting room skim as it covers such CB-friendly topics as Hyphy, Chingo Bling, Lil Boosie on the Chitlin’ Circuit, and a state by state Myspace rap rundown.

I also uploaded an early joint from U Know Who, a group on Vanilla Ice architect Tommy Quan’s Wemix label. They dropped an lp in the early 90s without the trunk rattling “Bo And Ho,” their best track. And after the jump we got the ridiculous video for “Sheek Fool” by Goldfinger, another Wemix act

    Okay… maybe Vibe is featured in waiting rooms in, um, certain neighborhoods. The last time I had to see a doctor the only hip-hop writing available was by SFJ, but, as the saying goes, different magazines for different demographics. Boosie’s still minstrelsy in any demographic, though.

    do you happen to know what’s the year for PKO’s “Don’t Fuck /W Texas” EP??? I’ve seen it labeled as 1989, 1990 and 1991… Did it come before or after Armed Dangerous is what I’m wondering.

    great you talked with tum tum. SInce listening and actually purchasing the amazing big tuck album the absolute truth, I found myself enjoying every music from DSR… That tum tum album that just got out had no review anywhere….

    I always thought PKO was from San Antonio, hence their response to “Just Like Compton” entitled “San Antonio Ain’t Shit like Compton”. I just looked at my copy of “The Good, The Bad, and the Mafia” and it was recorded in Dallas.

    actually i think you’re right. the core of the pko (magic mark, pony j/nino) was originally from san antonio. kottonmouth is from dallas, though and snake did a lot of their production so maybe they relocated at some point? it’s frustrating how little information there is out there about the group.

    PKO = San Antonio

    “Dont Fuck Wit Texas” was the first PKO album ever released, “Armed & Dangerous” came after that, then “They Scared Of A Nigga” peep the page peace.
