Michael Mixin’ Moor: “Oklahoma Bombing” Mix (April, 1995)
Here are a few mixes from the revolutionary Michael Mixxin Moor. Moor held down the LA scene for more than two decades as an activist and pioneering dj, hosting mixshows on the original 1580 KDAY and countless networks to follow. A cardiac arrest took Moor’s life tragically last April and these politically charged early 90s radio mixes from KCRW 89.9 remain as a testament to his legacy. Outstanding even by today’s standards Moor basically applied the Public Enemy method to a long form mixshow in a smart blend of current hip hop and fragments of audio culled from news and film. Flex drops bombs, but Moor dropped bombs. The untitled ‘92 mix opens with a freestyle from Mikah 9 but that’s just one of the many treats on these joints.
This youtube interview is equally fantastic, featuring Moor speaking on the politics behind his mixes and splicing tape in his studio. More footage is available at the Mediaburn.com archives: Part 1; Part 2.
Huge shout to longtime reader and Moor affiliate Jose GR for ripping these mixes last year on the old message board and providing a gang of information. If you anybody has additional recordings of Moore’s work please hit me up.

I used to stay up until midnight in Jr. High so I could listen to the Militant Mastermixx. That was the first place I heard Freestyle Fellowship. I got hella shit on tape from that era. Militant Mastermixx, Friday Night Flavas, Da Joint, Smoking Vinyl on 96.7 K-Wiz, the Wake Up Show…maybe one of these days I’ll transfer it to a digital medium.

96.7 K-Wiz? What’s that? but yeah THANKS MAJOR PROPS for posting mulitple Michael Moore mixes. The only one I had is Bablyon is Fallin and that shit is classic. I can’t wait to listen to these new ones. KDAY still has to be the greatest hip hop station ever.

96.7 K-Wiz was/is a college radio station in Southern California. They had this show, Smoking Vinyl, that DJ Kiilu (Freestyle Fellowship’s dj) and a gang of other djs would spin on. It was my first introduction to a lot of classic hip hop. I got a tape somewhere of a Freestyle Fellowship session on the show that ran about 30 minutes. A few years later, the Beat Junkies had a show on 96.7 for a little while. That was the first time I heard Ras Kass (right when “Remain Anonymous” came out). Sadly, I was too young to be up on the KDAY era.

That’s nuts. I can’t believe I never heard of that station or show. What part of SoCAL were you in when you listened to that?

I’m from Anaheim, now I live in Oakland. You?

These posts are insane. What if Brand Nubian, the scheduled guests for the Babylon is Falling mix, HAD shown up. The mix is so great already. Once of those moments that studio shit can never capture. When I was a kid in Boston it was Flavor of the City on WERS (Emerson College). I wish I taped it more and kept the ones I had. Thanks again NOZ
