Jump Horse & Do It

Mo-Jo – “Jump Stomp & Twist
from Jump Stomp & Twist 12″ (Jam-The-Box, 1984)
Kilo – “White Horse
from Get This Party Started LP (Ichiban/Wrap, 1995)
D4L – “Do It Like Me Baby
from Down 4 Life (Asylum / D4L, 2006)

Reset your watches, my down south brethren. Today we’re going look at three decades of A Town party rap.

Mo-Jo was one of the earliest MCs out of Atlanta and, like many of his successors, he committed the unforgivable and all destructive sin of making a record that the youth can dance to. If you listen carefully, you can hear the IQ of these poor kids dropping.

We’ve talked about Kilo before, but “White Horse” takes the crown for conscious ignorant party music.

And D4L needs no introduction. The greatest harmonizing rap group since the Crash Crew and the Freestyle Fellowship.

I’m going to be corny and state the obvious that Noz is killin’. Very, very much appreciated.

If my daughter ever dates a bro, I will play “White Horse” for him. I would stare into his eyes the entire time, “understand mister?” No racist.

Down 4 Life is the only album I have ever heard played on Atl radio start to finish like a mixtape (not the whole song, just parts of them). That is how great it is.

  10. Tray Says:

I liked the screwed mix of the DFB album but that’s about as ignorant as I’ll go….
