80 Blocks From Tiffany’s
Gary Weis – 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s (1979)
Multimedia dig. Get used to it. Records and tapes are so old fashioned. Directed by Gary Weis (bka “The Poor Man’s Albert Brooks”), 80 Blocks… is a relatively unbiased document of Bronx gangs the Savage Skulls and Savage Nomads in the late 70s and, by extension, also serves as glance at in the womb old school hip hop. Rarely seen outside of third generation bootlegs (and a few of those that did see it missed the point entirely), the film has been liberated at last by/for the Youtube generation. Needless to say, it is required viewing, so get your finger out your booty and press play.
Shout to the dude who posted it on the tube.

[...] Youtube and XXLMag.com don’t get along for me, but I wanted to direct you guys to my other blog, Cocaineblunts.com, where, thanks to the miracle of video sharing technology, we are screening Gary Weis’ South Bronx gang (read: early hip hop) documentary 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s. It is a must watch. var staf_confirmtext = ‘Mail sent’ #stafBlock { position: absolute; visibility:hidden; width: 180px;text-align:left; } #stafForm { background-color: #b3b89a; border: 2px solid #000; padding: 10px; margin:0; } #stafForm h2 {font-size:14px; margin-bottom:4; } #stafForm .input_text { width: 150px;margin-bottom: 4px;} #stafForm .input_submit {margin-bottom: 4px;} #stafForm label { width: 90px;display:block;} #stafClose { float: right; margin-right: 5px; } x [...]

I love stuff like this.
I couldnt help but think, “these guys are the rappers of today”. Or the rappers fathers….
I feel so sorry for all the babymamas out there, who were victims of these losers. Back then, it was really cool to be an outlaw. They were the “strong black men” of the hood. You felt safe with those type of dudes.
Did I see a 2-year-old Remy Ma at the block party, rofl. No, but forreal though!

[...] A few weeks ago, Noz posted some must-see You Tube links to a documentary called 80 Blocks From Tiffany’s. Taking an honest look at late 70s Bronx Gangs, the Savage Skulls and the Savage Nomads, the documentary simultaneously provided a rarely seen window into the womb of early hip-hop and motivated me to dust off an old VHS copy of 1982’s Wild Style, to take a look back at the first and arguably the most important hip-hop film ever made.
