Mac & Storm – “Mad Or Jealous

from Mad Or Jealous Cassingle (Jonique, 1996)

Here’s a one off single from the currently incarcerated one time No Limit emcee Mac and an heretofore unknown female rapper named Storm, who has a bit of a Bahamadia vibe to her style. On the whole the tape is a bit of a letdown, sort of a smoothed out, almost early Bad Boy sound to it, as laced by Mannie Fresh’s old school homie DJ Wop. We’ve heard early Mac over here before and this stands as further evidence that he was basically the best backpack rapper in New Orleans before Percy’s assembly line production approach reigned him in to the NL sound (and after his kiddie rap days). Even in those days, though, he proved to be a pretty lyrical dude with something of a New York rap sensibility. Not an essential tape by any means but a cool footnote for the three Mac completists out there and a quick gap filler for me to throw up after the sudden realization that i haven’t updated this site in about a week of tumblin’ erb. More to come soon. Here and there.

Really interesting. I was never keen on No Limit at all until my buddy showed me some Mac. Not mentioned enough, great post.

Somebody get that motherfucker out of prison. That shit still pisses me off. Good looks on the Mac coverage, Noz.

did Mac say he’s “more like Milli Vanilli”??? gotta love that ol 90s rap where you just rhymed words because they rhymed…

  4. nico Says:

    yo why’s he incarcerated?

  5. nico Says:

nm.. stupid question in these modern times…

manslaughter for all you who don’t know… stemming from a nightclub shooting. 30 years in the pen… damn

  6. Web Conn Says:

I always thought Mac shoulda been on Cash Money. If N***a’s In Trouble off Chopper City was any indication Mannie’s beats woulda fit Mac’s style like a glove.

Well consider me 1 of the three because to me this dude is absolutely 1 of the coldest I ever heard touch the mic. Damn shame about his situation tho. Rumor is,somebody actually admitted to being the shooter but yet Mac remains behind bars…

Its kinda hard bringing his name up in “best rapper alive” convos when he hasnt dropped anything official in 10 yrs. I mean he outshined Nas on a track……90s Nas!

  9. SMM Says:

I agree as well that he sounds a lot like nas, especially on one of his songs with B.G.

Also I think the record label name starts with an i not a j

  10. watta Says:

Also storm was a dope mc too out the psychoward. Dj wop is actually mannie fresh cousin.. and I still bring up mac in a top 10 convo and I say f anyone who tries to clown jus cuz he was off the tank… dude had the soldier shit and lyrical shit. Check the game, shell shocked, slow ya role (where he actually gave my homeboy mike king out here n columbus a shout out), fathers day, assassination (feat storm), tell me why, lockdown (which he remixed for ww3 a cple months b4 he was snt to the pen).

Also a good junt is his lost tapes album its for sale on his myspace.

you know i definitely underestimate the level of mac fandom. the lil mac video i have up on youtuve has like 100k views!

Awesome, great find. There’s at least two more Mac completests out there in the form of me and this other guy I met once.

This is my favorite thing you upped in a looooooooooooong time. Anyone else a bit put off by how long the ringing phone ring is in the beginning. I don’t ever recall hearing an individual ring go that long.

  13. Tray Says:

It does really sound like early Bad Boy and not in a good way.

  14. watta Says:

Yea noz mac is a real dude. Chk his myspace and its flooded with folk everyday post shotouts… real talk.. lil wayne is a clown when it comes to lyrics compared to macadon… str8 shell shocked robert raft

  15. DJ Detroit Romanov Says:

Is that the same girl from Tupac’s unreleased “4 My Niggaz”?

  16. DANJ! Says:

wow… this def. sounds waaaay out of the realm of what’s commonly considered N.O. rap. Not sure what it was like out there, but I’m guessing his brand wasn’t what was poppin’ in N.O. at the time. It still has a slight South feel to it, but the NY influence is clearly there.

    -D!

  17. watta Says:

@djdetroit.. naa that’s a diffrent storm.. u thinkn bout storm that ended up doin a lot of stuff with the outlaws. The storm on here was down with the psychoward..

And yea it has a ny feel but when it comes to spittn mac is a new york lyricists in terms of being able to say somethin… but chk the records. Ny has roots down to the n.o.

Mia x and mannie fresh started n a group called new york inc. Which was started by danny d, whom moved to the n.o. from nyc… then on top of that, the triggaman sample was actually created by the showboys whom are actually from ny. Many think they are from memphis or tha n.o.

I’m glad this post got some love, because the last one ended up immediately buried under a post that got like 200 comments.
