Noz – Long time daily reader. The fact you’re feeling a song I produced, off an album I executive produced has got me cheesin it right now b/c I know you’re hard to impress.
DaVinci is an artist from SF’s Fillmore District, and this is his debut album. I’ve been working with dude since I was 21, and I’ve always felt he is the guy who can change the face of Bay Area rap.
Here’s a link to a piece giving some background on DaVinci from today’s SF Weekly. http://is.gd/a5vO8
ewouldblock, we shot that at your bbq spot on 12/26 of 09. showed up with a cam and asked the gentleman in the vid (your pops?) if it was cool, and the rest is history.
J.Davinci is dope! I remember his early songs with Done Deal (San Quinn, Big Rich, Ya Boy, Bailey). This album has consistent/cohesive production and great lyrics/songs.
That shit was so raw I had to leave my first comment ever here.
The Bay has found it’s savior. Fuck it, the West Coast has! What other rapper have we had in recent yrs that can give us that vivid reality street rap in a lyrically articulate manner?
I pray homie doesn’t take the path of other Bay/Cali rappers by doing a bunch of weak mixtapes or pointless features on shitty rappers’ songs.
He’s been around the Bay scene on a lot of mixtapes and features over the past few years. I’ve got to say this is the best work he’s done so far, I didn’t know he had it in him. Thought he’d fly off the radar and just dissappear.
I always could tell dude was different. Seemed to be a bit out of place. Don’t get me wrong, his raps are grimey, but they have a level of maturity, more than other Bay rappers. I’ve always rooted for this guy, but I thought the hometown wouldn’t support someone like him cuz he’d always be rapping over their heads.
Thanks for the download though. Well worth it. I hope he blows.
This is the guy that sometimes goes by Blue Davinci and J Davinci right?
Can’t listen now at work, but I remember this guy he’s been on hella Bay-westcoast albums..
[...] Noz & MG are already co-signing San Francisco based rapper Davinci and after a couple listens I am too. Do yourself a favor and download his album for free or buy it. [...]
Yeah, the whole album is great. This is definitely the highlight, but it would be the highlight on most albums I’ve heard in the last couple of years. What’s his local support like?
This online campaign on all the blogs has been the only thing I heard about him since Butter and Gunz dropped. He doesn’t get play on the radio out here (no one does except jacka/erk tha jerk/laroo/e-40). The Bay generally doesn’t support itself anyways though. This and E-40′s projects have the most online “buzz” I’ve seen recently for any Bay artists..if that counts for anything…which it doesn’t.
there will be no new movements out the bay until either
1) there’s a new Power 92 type station- that is, somebody breaks KMEL’s monopoly
2) Big Von Johnson, and his ambitions of crossing over from radio personality to artist, retire and/or die
3) Somebody at the FCC realizes the regional monopolies ClearChannel Communications enjoy nationwide is pox on the free exchange of music and ideas we all know it to be.
Until then, it will be- yeah I heard of that guy, but only on the internet, which therefore makes it stuffwhitepeoplelike.
His buzz out here is about as good as it can get without being a radio rapper. If you’re in rap social circles out chea, then you’ve heard about this guys name for past few years bc of all the features, mixtape & compilation appearences.
His Internet buzz has also blown him up overnight in that cool guy hiphop circle too. I got homies in that circle and they can’t keep his name out they mouth right now. These are the dudes who love classic Quinn but hate all current Bay rap.
Outside of that, amongst regular people, there is no buzz. But to be fair there is no buzz for any local rapper amongst regular people unless you’re on the radio. Jacka was dominating the Bay rap scene for aonce Jack Artist, but it wasn’t until he got radio play did regular people know bout them. Same goes for the Team, Erk, etc.
Point being…he got great buzz locally. Regular everyday joes don’t know him, but they don’t know j Stalin or lil b either, so we can’t gauge buzz off the commoners. Sad, but that’s how it is in the Bay.
you pretty much nailed it. I have noticed that some of the artists like J.Stalin/LiveWire and The Jacka have started to get some recognition from various print media outlets within the Bay, which is starting bring in attention from the “regular joes”. Hopefully this trend will continue, and the output of quality music will increase. I’m just waiting for that LiveWire x Heiro album produced by DJ Fresh. I think that would kill the game.
Thanks so much for your brilliant post;this is the words that keeps me going through out these day. I’ve been searching around for your site after asked to visit them from a buddy and was thrilled when I was able to find it after searching for awhile. Being a avid blogger, I’m dazzled to see others taking initivative and contributing to the community. I just wanted to comment to show my support for your blog as it is very encouraging, and many writers do not get authorization they deserve.
