Recent Adds 2/10

This is the series where we check terrestrial radio charts to see what independent records they have been adding to the playlist. The idea is that it will help shine some light on semi-significant songs that slip below the blogosphere. And figure out whose payolaing which payholes. But really it just amounts to me making fun of youtube clips.

Likeblood f/ Bobby Valentino – “Money Over Here” (Washington, DC)

When I first heard “Money Over Here” a few months back I called it the first DMV record to sound like a radio hit. Not in the I hear a hit sense, but in the sense that it fits the formula, the format. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but it makes sense that it’s now becoming the first DC rap song in a long time to get some radio play without a Lady Gaga or Gucci cameo. Notably, however, it’s not getting spins *in* the DMV. Welcome to DC.
Added: KBTT Shreveport, LA; KJMM Tusla, OK; WIBB Macon, GA; Wilmington, DE +14 more.

Bone – “Homegurl” (Ft Worth, TX)

Triggerman alert! Bone just signed to Def Jam and this record could be huge (pause). I feel like I need to do a separate post for all the DFW adds. Over the last year or so Dallas has far and above been the most prominent city for independent LCD rap. Their number one export is minor hits. Yet nobody above ground seems to have noticed. Maybe it’s because Dallas lacks a concrete sound, most of this stuff is a loose fusion of Atlanta, Houston and/or Baton Rouge. Or maybe the media is just tired of claiming cities as THE NEXT BIG THING only to watch them fizzle. Other recent Dallas rap adds: B-Hamp’s “Fooly,”, Bay Bay & The Dallas All Stars’ “I Stay,” Young T’s “Shawty What It Is” and Young Black’s “Big Boi Stuntin’.
Added: KBBT San Antonio, TX; KXHT Memphis, TN; WEUP Huntsville, AL; WOWI Norfolk, VA + 24 more.

Lil Buck & Lil Deezy – “Monkey Man” (?, LA)

Sometimes this dance rap shit goes too far. This would be one of those occasions. The one kid knows it too, that’s why he’s like “yeah, that’s what I said, The Monkey Man!”
Added: WEMX Baton Rouge, LA.

Meek Millz – “Make ‘Em Say” (Philadelphia, PA)

More Meek today. It’s always good to see local heroes getting burn in and around their hometown. And if nothing else this video is notable for inspiring this great youtube comment: “I don’t get? why rappers dress like little white kids now though.”
Added: WPHI Philadelphia, PA; WUSL Philadelphia, PA; WJKS Wilmington, DE.

Jay Electronica – “Exhibit C” (New Orleans, LA)

Oh yes. This has been satellite radio bait from day one (Sirius’ rap playlist is basically the Nah Right news feed) but it also seems to have gotten some actual terrestrial radio play. This proves one of two things – that Jay has in fact been planted from the TIs from day one or that all these radio DJs who whine about how little control they have over the radio playlists just need to push a little harder for what they believe in. I’m thinking it’s the later. In all seriousness it’s a great look that a hookless boom bap record can get play anywhere. Great to see New Orleans picking up on it as well.
Added: KKND New Orleans, LA; WCCG Fayetteville, NC; WWPR New York, NY; WZMX Hartford, CT +3 more.

Red Cafe f/ Fabolous – “I’m Ill”

Continuing the 2010 Rob Base revitalization. Red’s one of the many New York rappers who nobody really cares about but continues to get minor burn and repeat chances because he knows the right DJs. But recently he’s started to earn his keep by making great records all of the sudden.
Added: WQHT New York, NY; WJTT Chattanooga, TN; WWKX Providence, RI; WCCG Fayetteville, NC +6 more.

Lil Haze f/ Dorrough & Rich Boy – “Swagg On” (Birmingham, AL)

This record seemed way too polished and I thought it might be one of those secret major label plants, so I googled him. It turns out dude is(was?) on ancient blues label Malaco. A ZZ Hill remix would be a good look. Is ZZ Hill still alive? Probably not.
Adds: WRBJ Jackson, MS.

Dat Boy Hot – “Up And Down” (Chicago, IL)

Chi town producer Xcel went off in so many weird directions with the Dude N’ Em album that this rehash of his “Gettin’ Some” formula is a complete let down. Dat Boy Hot needs to do a collaboration with Philadelphia’s Young Hot.
Adds: WCGI Chicago, IL.

Down Bad – “Loc’s On” (Baton Rouge, LA)

Mouse-lite. Recommended.
Added: WEMX Baton Rouge, LA.

Sullee f/ Busta Rhymes – “Sippin” (Boston, MA)

The white-boy-pays-for-famous-rap-verse seems like it’s going to be a common recurrence on these posts. Either that or Sullee is Busta’s Beantown coke connect. He raps like the guy who always tries to rap at frat parties does. Yeah that’s what I said, frat parties.
Added: WCCG Fayetteville, NC; WJUC Toledo, OH; WXIS Johnson City, TN.

Pinney Woods f/ Lil Wayne – “Be Alright” (Chattanooga, TN)

And this Chattanoogan splurged for a Wayne verse that went completely under the radar. It’s not a bad record though,
kind of a lightweight “Duffle Bag Boy.”
Added: KIPR Little Rock, AK; WEMX Baton Rouge, LA; WJTT Chattanooga, TN.

Reality Laster – “Candi Girl” (Miami, FL)

Reality Laster was already #rapnameoftheweek. Too bad the song isn’t as good as his name. Or at all. These vocals are mixed so incredibly low.
Added: WBTF Lexington, KY; WXIS Johnson City, TN.

Yung Ralph f/ Zaytoven – “Bought Dat” (Atlanta, GA)

It’s surprising to see that Zay is still working with Big Cat artists after Gucci’s left on such bad terms, but maybe this is just an old track. The track is a forgettable autotuned two bit OJ The Juuman impersonation, and what I fear the future of rap might be.
Added: WHHL St Louis, MO; WJLB Detroit, MI; WJWZ Montgomery, AL.

Wochee f/ Lil Boosie – “Rearview” (Carencro, LA)

This sounds like rap that you would hear on the radio in Louisiana. I’m running out of steam here.
Added: KBBT Shreveport, LA; KRKA Lafayette, LA; KRRQ Lafayette, LA; WIBB Macon, GA.

“Bought Dat” was originally released in like June or something I think. it’s def. a few months old, dunno why i’ve been hearing about it everywhere all of a sudden

  2. noz Says:

Yeah a lot of these records are old in webtime. That Likeblood has been out since Septemberish. That’s the nature of radio.

  3. noz Says:

I just realized that Sullee is from The White Rapper Show.

  4. walkmasterflex Says:

the sullee record is terrible, it’s making my impending move to boston seem more depressing. the bone, meek millz, pinney woods, and wochee records are real gems though

  5. Abe Beame Says:

First off congrats on making the most of the blizzard, blog on a mission shit. The Zaytoven track is pretty old, at least 6 months I’d wager 10. I can’t win man, I actually fuck with it pretty hard. I think you forgot to include the words “past present and foreseeable” in front of future of rap. In my opinion, in no way is this remotely innovative or recognizably different than any number of slow bounce big hook over a huge playful beat anthems that have been obliterating the air waves for I’d estimate 5+. Surprised you’re fucking with that Red, cosign the blurb including his long history of shittiness and relevance via connections leading up to surprisingly solid output.

  6. Jesse Says:

“I’m Ill” is the No. 1 car stereo record in NYC right now. I think people have underestimated Red Cafe. His flow/style works equally well on uptempo and slower beats.
On a separate note, “Exhibit C” debuted on the Billboard R&B/Hip-hop singles chart this week.

  7. david Says:

    great series idea

didnt know nyc had ‘car stereo records’ dont yall just ride the subway er “bomb the system”

  8. The Nashvillain Says:

    chat-town tennessee fuck yes son

  9. The Nashvillain Says:

related: what is de la soul’s affinity for chattanooga? they reference the chattanooga champ myriad occasions it seems…

  10. barns Says:

    this is a great series.

for real though, why these rappers dress like little whie kids now

  11. nico Says:

    muchos gracias mayn,

CBrap is mostly how I stay up on dope rap joints these days. I only dug about half ov these… but half is enough ;)

  12. MF Says:

This is slightly unkind to Red Cafe as he’s been making one of these type of joints (street bangers which work on the radio/in clubs aka the type of records most current NYC rappers just don’t know how to make) a year since Paper Touchin’ in 2007.

  13. p-417 Says:

“Red Café” is still such a shitty rapname though

  14. Yayo Says:

Red Cafe is just not a name for a rapper

  15. david Says:

where are u finding adds listed — i never paid attention in ‘college radio’ days

  16. ANU Says:

    “great series idea”

  17. O Says:

A lot of people promote their music to the radio up to a year after its release, the radio stations never know when it really drops though.

  18. Abe Beame Says:

God, if Red Cafe starts getting the “he was always nice and his early stuff doesn’t suck” treatment it will serve as definitive proof that nothing is bad anymore.

  19. Andrew Barber Says:

The play DatBoyHot’s “Up & Down” AD NASEUM here. It’s now in rotation as much as Trey Songz, Kells, Young Money and Gucci, which is the only thing Chicaog radio plays

  20. thaddeus clark Says:

The Monkey Man will not do wonders for race-relations.

  21. Matthew Africa Says:

I hope you stay with this series. Where are you getting your data from, BDS?

  22. noz Says:

    Mediabase.

  23. Iceberg Slim Says:

Yea that cat “Bone” gets a lot of radio spins in TX but folks don’t really know his name. Soon as they find out the response is usually not good.

I’m glad DFW hasn’t been labeled as the next big thing. We see what happened after the Houston explosion. Texas rap got pigeon holed and Texas rappers became a caricature.

  24. Maurice Garland Says:

yeah…the bought dat is pretty old…i actually liked it though. ironically, the first time i heard it was on the the radio…so theyve known about it at least.

  25. ill_fittin Says:

i miss the white rapper show so so much

  26. paulyg Says:

I believe Sullee is a White Rapper Show alum

  27. scjoha Says:

Nice! Check blogs a lot, but the Sullee and Pinney Woods song never popped up there despite prominent features.
Would love to ee this as a recurrent series!

  28. Shelliano aka JihaD Says:

Two Philly rappers get mentioned in a Noz blog!!!

    Philly We DID It!!!!

    JihaD

  29. B.S. Says:

Wow, that Sullee track really is awful. Kinda disappointed by that Yung Ralph/Zaytoven track too. Oh well. I agree with the other commenters that this is a great series idea.

  30. TKG Says:

Do the Ricky Bobby was also on Malaco.
I don’t know if they actually still have good A&R connections with MS radio.
Malaco breaking into southern hip-hop market feels like a legit interesting story. I hope they build big review shows with Latimore.

  31. Andy Hutchins Says:

That “Be Alright” is a beat I first heard on an early 2009 Kanye mixtape. Oh, and that was probably Kanye on the chorus. Oh, and there was another rapper, equally boring, on the beat when I heard it then. Oh, and I sort of thought this was a Kanye beat.

So maybe Pinney Woods just straight jacked the beat? I don’t know. I do like the Wayne verse, though.

  32. jimb0 Says:

Sullee’s not from Boston proper. He’s from an extremely affluent suburb south of Boston (maybe that’s the coke connect?). His mom was my 6th grade biology teacher. She was a bitch and he’s an embarrassment.

  33. Teach Me How to Boogie #2: “The Monkey Man” « BACK TO THE WORLD Says:

[...] year. I found out about it soon after – not from a Baton Rouge urban station, from the blog Cocaine Blunts. The signifiers here are, um, racially loaded, though probably without intent given that Lil Buck [...]

  34. wczasy Says:

I didn’t rather get this when I first feature it. Merely when I went through it a second time, it all became open. Thanks for the insight. Absolutely thing to consider just about.
