Smellin’ Rockport Soles

Main Source – “Think”
Main Source – “Atom“
from Think 12″ (Actual Records, 1989)
BONUS BEAT for today’s XXL post here is Main Source’s sought after first 12″, inexplicably left off the album, despite clearly being the inspiration for it’s title. It’s probably been blogged about to death, but whatever, I don’t read blogs anyway.
Large Professor had such a unecessarily paranoid fear of other rappers biting his rhymes, I wonder if that stems from some sort traumatic incident as a youth.
One day, when rap blogging becomes a multi-billion dollar industry and I cash in my XXLMag.com stock options I will purchase this 12″. Either that or I’ll just wait for the Random Rap bubble to burst and get it in the dollar bin from whence it came.

his solo record from ‘02 was a great disappointment, but recently he made some decent beats on the mpc4000. he might be influential, however there are only two albums he fully produced (breaking atoms & vagina diner). These are classic though. Look at Diamond, they never talk about him either, he only produced one classic album.
The producers they mention the most are the ones with plenty of classic records – look at pete rock (his two records with cl, the yz album, ini, the first soul survivor) or primo (4 classic gang starr albums, group home, 2 jeru lps).

what i actually wanted to say is that producers like dre, primo or pete rock could stay relevant for a longer time than say people like diamond, large pro or whoever. like when pete rock came out with soul survivor in ‘98, so many producers bit that sound, from dilla to madlib to most of the underground beatmakers of the day.

I actually got this shit when it came out and found it for like 4 buks after that…..not sure if the second one is the original pressing but for sure the first one is…..(was in early 90s)..the color of the red label is a lil off
atom was also on a comp from my area called the Cold Front Compilation….all canadian acts (djs were from toronto)
it was on actual records which was the two brother’s mother’s label
(sir scratch and k kut’s mom who was also their manager)
i think thats why the group eventually broke up….cant be good having 2/3 peoples moms managing the group…..lots of room for drama
