R.I.P. Pimp C

Late on this as usual (I don’t even turn my computer on until 5 PM these days). Here are some lesser known loosies in memory of the Pimp. Think of them as bonus track for last year’s $200 Cologne comp (though I’m not sure how many of these Pimp actually produced, as you can imagine production credits are spotty on a lot of these joints). Call it the Issey Miake Special edition.
D’Meka f/ UGK – “Money Stacks“ (Cincinnati, OH)
from Now… Feel Me (All Net, 1997)
Pimp doesn’t actually rap on this but he does handle hook and production duties. And that production is predictably perfect.
Kottonmouth f/ Pimp C – “Satisfied“ (Dallas, Tx)
from 100% Kottonmouth (Youngsta, 1995)
Dallas mc Kottonmouth of PKO and the Rally Boys is a minor Texas rap icon in his own right and him and Pimp sounded so damn comfortable together. Despite (or maybe because of) all his promiscuity pimping, Chad also spent a lot of time talking about safe sex and AIDS in particular (cue bdotcrawford with some sub-Howard Stern joke about homosexuality.) “See a bitch can check your dick and she can squeeze your balls / but you don’t really know what’s coming down those pussy walls / it could be steaming n**ga / it could be vd / she could be fucking a n**ga that used to fuck a bitch that used to fuck with Eazy!”
Sir T f/ Pimp C – “Under My Rug“ (Florida?)
from Black Grove Compilation (Black Grove, 2004)
UGK has always had a close if understated relationship with New Orleans music, the gulf coast isn’t that big. The red haired skunk hook here is a direct call back to first wave Cash Money signees PMW’s bounce classic “Splift Out.”
Kilo G f/ Pimp C – “Release Me“ (New Orleans, LA)
from The Bloody City (Cash Money, 1996)
And here’s Pimp rocking in real time with another Cash Money act, the since deceased Kilo G. Bloody City is one of the stronger pre-Universal CMR full lengths and probably deserves its own post one day. But today is about Pimp Chad.
UGK, Keith Murray & Lord Jamar – “Live Wires Connect“ (New York City, NY)
from Don’t Be A Menance Soundtrack (Island, 1996)
Boom Bap Rap! “In Brooklyn, New York I’m down with Lord Jamar.”
Klas One f/ UGK – “Peep Yo Gal“ (Houston, TX)
from Once In A Blue Moon (Krossroads, 1999)
One of my favorite Pimp techniques of all time is where he double tracks his verse, singing one track and rapping the other. He does this both here and on the Sir T track. “Trying to make that girl your spouse / when I done already been in her mouth!”

“I’m not sure Kottonmouth is in PKO i think he just made some songs with them. They’rs from San Antonio.”
I’m certain that Kotton was in one iteration of the PKO lineup, but I’m not familiar enough with their catalog comment on which/when.

“I’m not sure Kottonmouth is in PKO”
He was in the group but left, he recorded as a member on the album No Pain No Gain in 96 and Nino released Kottonmouth’s solo album on his label.

Damn that Live Wires Connect track is dope. Pimp was obviously one of the dopest producers but doesn’t get enough respect as a rapper; it’s nice to hear him go in on something out of his usual lane. Thanks for this Noz.

re: D’Meka track …Can you point to a good write up about mid to late 90’s Ohio rap? Or can you do one? I downloaded this mix not too long ago: http://philaflava.blogspot.com/2008/11/from-where-ohio.html and I love it, would love to dig deeper or know more about the scene.

Barns: love that folder. Don’t know shit about that scene but for a later & backpacker production compliment to all that energy and careening g-funk there’s the Mission Control Presents: Prehistoric Sounds sampler from 2000 with beats from J Period and Lil Jon and others. Weak sauce in a Pimp C thread i know, and lord forgive me, but u might dig it. Elite Terrorist – Oh-10 is on youtube. Also maybe u wanna check out this dude The Catalyst goin in over MHz “World Premier”.

Has anyone heard that N.O. Joe produced Trill Ent. song that has the sample from the Ridin’ Dirty outtro and the 8Ball sample? Holy shit. (It’s on Dirty Glove Bastard). I wish N.O. Joe got behind the boards on Bun’s next solo album. Bun needs to realize that all the crossover Sean Kingston shit he pulls with his solo projects is gonna fall flat, and all the real UGK fans would probably start tearing up at a Bun B solo album produced by NO Joe, with guest spots only from Short, Ball & G, Boosie & Webbie, etc. That would be like the Premier-produced Nas album of the south (but fuck Nas though).
The loss of this man is one of the saddest things to ever happen to hip-hop music, period. Rest in peace.

Thanks very much for these pimp songs! More Pimp C is always welcome.
My pick for best UGK album: Super Tight – that swamp funk, that Texas – Louisiana Funk was unique and simply great on Geto Boys’ Till Death Do Us Part and Scarfaces’ The World is Yours (which is my pick for best Scarface album, if you skip the DMG and 2Low solo tracks) where that sound was provided by N.O. Joe. One year later, on Super Tight, Pimp C created his own unique version with a little help of the Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli. On Ridin Dirty, this kind of funk is largely abandoned, despite or rather because of the inclusion of N.O. Joe beats, because he was already on that super clean G-Funk shit, which resulted in some great N.O. Joe beats, but also some boring.
So, soundwise, The World is yours and Super Tight are the respective artists greatest albums.

Sir T – It’s Under My Rug was already recorded in 1998, according to this copyrights statistics site (or whatever it is):
