Laylaw – “Monster Rapping

from Monster Rapping (Rolex, 1985)

This is what a thousand dollar rap record sounds like. Spooky.

“Monster Rapping” was produced by Dr. Dre and Lonzo from the World Class Wreckin Cru. Larry Goodman aka Laylaw would later figure prominently in the Above The Law production unit.

When I hear stuff like this, I realize why Dre wants to distance himself from WCWC, but that surgery joint is still the shit. I wonder if Dre knows how much cache his electro stuff has in the house scene. When Dre gets shouted on Daft Punk’s Teachers it’s for his electro shit, not
    Chronic.

“When Dre gets shouted on Daft Punk’s Teachers it’s for his electro shit, not Chronic.”

    I seriously doubt that.

  9. Hele Fitta Says:

and for the record I’m a big fan of his electro shit. (OK, maybe not this particular record …)

  10. Hele Fitta Says:

also if dre’s early stuff had any impact at all on dance music (which is debatable, as detroit electro stuff either predates or is contemporary with that stuff), it would have to be techno not house. I can see Jeff Mills/The Wizard playing that stuff (or actually I think he did), but not Ron Hardy.

And Daniel Wang “covered” (or rather replayed the riff from) G Thang on “In The Street”. Why is it such a stretch to imagine house producers being inspired by The Chronic -like EVERYONE ELSE (even outside hip hop) was when it dropped?
