Local Product: Seattle Bonus Beats

griff

Crafty & Frame – “Keep Ya Movin’

Foul Play – “Nightfall Around The Way

Jake One sent over a big folder of Seattle hip hop for the Local Product posts and a couple of tracks didn’t really fit into the narrative. I have no information on these artists, but they are very dope. Maybe some of my 206 heads can fill in the blanks?

Oh shit, another Foul Play joint uncovered.

Serch signed Foul Play to Wild Pitch back in the mid-90’s before they folded. You may be familiar with “Black Clouds” off DJ Eclipse’s Wild Pitch Blends. Bobbito used to play it once in awhile. They also did a track with Heltah Skeltah that ended up on a bootleg somewhere.

They were from Seattle but moved to NYC. They were dope, wonder what became of them.

Oh hell yeah. I didn’t realize it was the same group.

Frame, later known as Framework, put out a local classic called Hello World in ‘05 all produced by local legend BeanOne (usually referred to as the 3rd in the 206’s ‘holy trinity’ along with Jake & Vita). if yr interested in a link to that i got you.

Foul Play is a group from Tacoma, WA (think they were army brats though) that was signed to Wild Pitch in the mid 90’s but never came out as Foul Play. Their demo was really dope and produced entirely by my homie Mario. They were tight with Bootcamp somehow and resurfaced as Black Ceasar on Tommy Boy in the late 90’s. They completely changed to more of a west coast sound as Black Ceasar with beats by Johnny J of 2pac fame. Mario once told me before the Wild Pitch deal, Puffy was supposed to sign him in the early Bad Boy days but something went bad.

Thanks much for this. I wish that entire Foul Play demo tape would surface already.

I posted that Foul Play/Heltah Skeltah track here-

Like Digital Stimulation said, there was a bootleg with this on it.
This was separated from a Bobbito tape that someone uploaded at Philaflava, though. I forgot who, but props to them.

Jake pretty much summed it up on Foul Play.. I did the scratches on Nightfall Around The Way & the other songs on the demo.

On another note I posted a comment on pt 1 earlier & I think Noz misunderstood what I was trying to say. I think this piece is really dope & sheds some light on the 206, but I was just saying that a lot of people will catch feelings.

the crafty and frame joint is pretty generic and uneventful…

the foul play track however.. ughhhhh! thats dope.

  13. nico Says:

they flippin that crooklyn dodgers sample too right? I mean, whatever the original source is.. Not actually sampling the dodgers track.

  14. Taheed Says:

Yeah foul play was a group consisting of my some friends I grew up with in Hawaii. Makoha and Thomas. They got stationed in Tacoma in like 92 or 93. Koha was my best friend and was a beast from day one. Their demo was a classic he sent me a copy of it. Still got it I think. Mario (who produced the demo) was dope as hell! I’m shocked he didn’t blow.

  15. soren Says:

the sample is summer breeze by ramsey lewis.

  16. bad-cop Says:

Have the “demo” version of Nightfall, different lyrics and harder beat.

Also got a DAT rip of Boo Yah and full rip of Black Clouds Demo (same version as played on WKCR).

    Happy to share!

Taheed, any chance of getting copy of that demo?
