Mixtape: B.O.B. vs. Bloggy Ray

B.O.B. f/ Playboy Tre & Killer Mike – “Say What You Want”
Bobby Ray – “Camera“
from B.O.B. Vs. Bobby Ray [NODJ] (Mixtape, 2009)
Finally, a mixtape that features both Asher Roth and OJ da Juiceman!
B.O.B. is snapping on here when he wants to. I just wish he never let himself get involved with all these blog boys and I am just imagining if the Asher, Mickey Facts & Charles Hamilton spots were replaced with Bohagon Young Dro and Homebwoi but whatever. Also he needs to stop singing. The “Bobby Ray” half of the tape is mostly unacceptable sub “Hey Ya” rap.
No DJ mixtape rips are the best thing to happen to hip hop since Roger Linn but feel free to download the mixed version if you are into sadomasochism. Tracklisting after the jump.

All rappers are blog rappers now.

Bob spends half this tape rapping ABOUT blogs. I don’t think Juney Boomdata or Chalie Boy or Mitchy Slick are ever going to do that.

Juney Boomdata, Charlie Boy and Mitchy Slick are also never going to make the cover of XXL, either. So what does that tell you?

“I don’t think Juney Boomdata or Chalie Boy or Mitchy Slick are ever going to do that.”
Fuckin A.
Bob needs to find something interesting (other than blogs) he loves to rap about as much as Juney loves to rap about strippers, Chalie loves to sing about purple and Mitchy loves to rap about gang shit.. Maybe he could start rappin about weed again.
*haven’t listent to this yet, so I don’t really know what he raps about right now..

I fail to see how that’s relevant to your original argument. Most significant rap artists have never been on the cover of XXL.

I can’t decide if I like Juney or not. Sometimes I think he’s a great classic sex obsessed MC like AMG or something (for real), but at other times he sounds like Soulja Boy at his worst. He’s done a few good songs about strip clubs that are better than most songs about strip clubs.

I think your confusing the term”significant” with “obscure rappers you happen to like.” You could argue that’s a pretty thorough snapshot of the most popular and significant artists of hip hop over the last ten years.
The point being, of course, that B.O.B. ( or any number of rappers in tight jeans) has made significant in-roads in the industry to the point he’s been featured on national magazine covers doing exactly what he has been doing (for better or worse) by being highlighted by blogs (including yours). And any rapper looking to break nationally would be wise to do so including any number of the rappers that are featured on this blog.
Gucci Mane isn’t going to get to Carnegie Hall just by selling mixtapes out of his trunk in his Atlanta.

You’re right. I should have said “many significant rappers have never been on an XXL cover.”
As is usually the case with this site I only acknowledge significance amongst hip hop’s core listeners. Performing at Carnegie Hall or getting an Ellen Degeneres interview has nothing to do with any conversations we have here.

And Chalie Boy and Mitchy Slick will almost certainly have more successful long term careers than most of the rappers on that XXL cover.

Somebody needs to delete the Gnarls Barkley albums from B.o.B.’s Ipod.

I get it. You don’t like the fact that B.O.B. is breaking away from his roots to branch out and collaborate with hipster rap artists (or in his case get his Love Below on, I guess) because it doesn’t fit your particular bill of authenticity. As if any particular group of rap fans or artists had a stranglehold on realness in hip hop. And part of that is that its not music that is being promoted on places like Nah Right (as if you don’t run one of the most popular blogs on the net).
What I’m saying when I say all rap is blog rap now is that blogs are just one particular tool for fandom. Its the way fans connect and share music that they like. Its one particular aspect of fandom that is gaining alot of attention due to the fact it’s relatively new. But ALL successful rappers use them now. And those that don’t aren’t being very smart with their careers. Your fear of them is totally irrational considering YOU RUN ONE.

Let’s hope B.o.B has beaten Bobby Ray into a bloody pulp that can’t record any more songs by the time he records his proper album. Jesus, the second half of this mixtape is embarassing. Who the hell even likes songs like “Trippin’” anyway? Christ…
Holy crap is “I Am The Man” good, though.

Many (most?) hip hop listeners do not know or care what a blog is.
Why do you fruitflies throw around the word “authenticity” as if it’s a slur?
Jun 22nd, 2009
DR. NO
(or in his case get his Love Below on, I guess)
^^^^^
That’s my issue- Andre had many songs/hits/albums under his belt when he tried to do a love below. He had such a foundation of really creative output that he could play around. Imo new hip hop artists are so caught up in new media that they think they’ve worn out their thing + are over it by the time anybody knows what their thing is.

wtf does ‘authenticity’ have to do with it? he doesnt like that when BOB starts getting his love below on the results are shitty. its not like shitty trap rap is any better or something. but BOB is a competent rapper making shitty fake andre songs when he should stick to what he’s GOOD AT, not what is supposedly ‘more authentic’

The Bobby Ray half of this tape is absolutely unlistenable, and I tried, I really did. A couple of observations: 1) When did people start comparing B.o.B. to 3 Stacks?! He spends as much time talking about that as he does blogs. Don’t get me wrong, I like B.o.B., but he’s nowhere near Andre’s level, not even close. I love the part at the end of the T.I. collabo when T.I. laughs his ass off at the idea that his verse was weaker (imo, it wasn’t). 2) Someone needs to take Asher Roth down a notch. “The next Em, Ye, and Dre?” Ummm…. no! And again, who’s making that comparison? Do I think it’s “amazing” that you guys were on a XXL cover? No, for reasons Noz already specified. Seriously, if he wasn’t getting backing from ATL would anyone in their right mind think that Asher Roth was anything more than a weak excuse for Anticon-esque filler verses? I want to punch him in his teeth.

Holy crap, Killer Mike and T.I. eat these beats alive. Fury is gonna be on my producers-to-watch list. Sampling from O Brother Where Art Thou? is a win. Sounds like something off Bubba Sparxxx – Deliverance which is a win as far as I’m concerned. And the one with the Curtis sample is slammin’.
B.o.B. is cool. The sub-Love Below wankery needs to stop but it obviously won’t, he’ll do more of it just to spite people like us. And I’ll put up with it if the rapping stays good. He’s definitely nicer than most of the others on that XXL cover, and at least his rapping on this is better, because more emotive, than Wale’s on his tape. But I’m not going to be more than mildly enthusiastic until he makes something as good as “Life of Sin” again. That song is a gem.
In the absence of great B.o.B. jams at least Playboy Tre (and Pill) are snapping.
