Gucci Watch Sunday
Gucci Mane – “Photoshoot”
Gucci Mane f/ Juvenile – “Trigger Play” FUCKWMG
Maybe it goes without saying but rappers stay on their own dicks. As an interviewer I can’t tell you how frustrating it is when dudes will sit there with a straight face and tell you “I only listen to myself right now” or “I’m basically my own influence.” Gucci Mane is the exact opposite. He never forgot how to be a rap fan. He cuts records with aging underground heroes like Khujo Goodie and Playa Fly. He quotes Cee-Lo and name drops Kilo. The third verse to “Photoshoot”, the video for which (finally) dropped today, is a frantic tribute to his peers and predecessors. “UGK my favorite group / for years been riding with those guys / Eightball told me ‘Lay It Down‘ and I did it ’bout 30 times”. I can’t find the link right now, but there’s a clip on World Star (?) where some intrepid reporter (ahem) asks Gucci about how it feels to be the hottest rapper out and he says something along the lines of “I’m not even in the top ten.” That’s humility.
“Trigger Play” also just hit the web and finds Gucci even deeper in fanboy mode. It’s an unapologetic tribute to late 90s Cash Money, feeling just like one of the darker album tracks from that era. (In fact it shares a name with one.) Zaytoven works a loose Mannie Fresh facsimile while Gucci dons a Juvenile mask in the presence of Juvenile. It isn’t exactly an upper echelon Gucci track but he probably loved making it. And Juve kills his cameo, a nice recovery after the worst song of his career.
Videos for “I Think I Love Her” f/ Uncredited Female Rapper #4080 (yeh! burr!) and “She Got A Friend” f/ Juelz and Big Boi (meh, errr…) were released earlier as well. Both after the jump. FUCKWMG

The Photoshoot video is pretty broke but also interesting in that it shows how Gucci performs the record. Particularly that third verse, which he delivers without batting an eye or breaking a sweat or moving his head. Boomtown probably added the unnecessary explosion effects just to let you know, yes, he is killing it despite what your eyes are telling you.

’she got a friend’ is kinda wack except for gucci’s verse which kills

also did u call that gucci song ‘photoshop’ on purpose??

Isn’t the title of that song “photoshoot” ? not “photoshop” ? Or did I just missed some kind of joke ?
Did I just see Zilla in it, too ?

Man, Playa Fly may be my favorite underrated southern rapper, Young Bleed and Fiend are close seconds. Glad to know Gucci stays humble, that’s a rarity these days. Also, no Saturday throwback post this week?

“also did u call that gucci song ‘photoshop’ on purpose??”
I wish I did. I need more sleep.

Man, I downloaded that Evil Empire ‘Be South’ mixtape earlier and all the blatant Gucci & OJ biting is out of hand. Shawty Lo is doing both their adlibs at once and Playaz Circle has a track (with Jeezy no less) where they keep going on about stupid fruity swag. I ride for Gucci but the era of OJ biters is gonna be bizarre.

man that video for “I think i love her” is weird, why is Gucci playing a game of giant chess?

i take back what i said about ‘i got a friend’ its pretty dope all around

*More useless knowledge* – that Trigger Play joint is probably about 4 years old now. Juve laid his part back then and Gucci jumped on it somewhere in between.
And while I’m on it, I’ve accepted the fact that we’ll never see 400 Degreez Juve anymore but can we atleast get this one back? http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x64u2_juvenile-rodeo_music He needs to find a producer that can stick with the vibe of this and Slow Motion. He’s probably never going to make another big pop crossover song so he’d be better served putting out solid albums on KOCH like BG did then wasting his time over that neptunes trash.

like noz pointed out — gucci’s stoic attitude for the third verse of the “photoshoot” video is a) awesome b) hard as hell.
“i think i love her” is pretty freaky, especially with gucci’s groaning “I THINK I LOOOVE HERRRRRR”
and yeah, “she gotta friend” is the weakest of the tracks, but not because of la flare (verses: gucci > santana > big boi weirdly enough). the way he ends that verse … “appetizer 30 blunts” is the shit

don p for breakfast, rose for lunch, cristal for dinner appetizer 30 blunts

AWW SHIT! Photoshoot got a video??
The best part about that third verse is right after he goes into rapidfire mode with the record sounding like its skipping (”trynna find that trina type, I kill them girls like Killa Mike, Killa Mike, I kill a mike, so shout out to slick Killa Mike”), the camera flash sounds and he gets right back with this laid back steez “Me and Plies, jiggy eyes, back to back in Hummers..”
gets me every.single.time
June 21st, 2009 at 10:49 pm
I’m pretty sure it’s “Shawnna fine and Trina tight” and “me and Fly, chinky eyed…”
June 21st, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Also “I kill them girls like killers might” something like that?

Yeah, I was going to say that I would’ve liked this song better with B.G., who still does a pretty serviceable imitation of himself. Whereas Juvie’s still good, but doesn’t sound anything like he did when he first came out, thereby kinda fucking up the tribute to 90s Cash Money vibe.

Holy guacamoly that Juvenile/Neptunes songs is, without a doubt, the worst song of his career. Wowzers.
It’s probably what Juvenile haters who don’t listen to him imagine what he sounds like all the time.

I like to think that Gucci says “Ja Rule the Damaja” and then I like to wonder what Ja + Jeru think about that..like them turning towards each other like wtf??

“I’m pretty sure it’s “Shawnna fine and Trina tight” and “me and Fly, chinky eyed…”
“Also “I kill them girls like killers might” something like that?”
Well dayum. You’re right. I’ve been muttering “Trynna find the Trina type” like it was gospel for the last couple of months. It just made so much sense.
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:17 pm
lmao. Yeah, the Jeru reference threw me. I really didn’t think Jeru was on Gucci’s rader. Gotta give him even more props. Gucci stays winning.

That “I Think I Love Her” joint is crazy in a Patrick Bateman “American Psycho.” Now that I think about it, a lot of his stuff sounds like American Psycho meets the street. Good stuff.

“the Uncredited Female Rapper #4080″ is actually Esther Dean. a writter/singer who is singed to Zone 4 Polow Da Don. She actually co-wrote on the new single with T.I. and Mary J Blige “Remember Me”.
