@ Where Your Sister Went

MF Doom – “Dead Bent

MF Doom – “Gas Drawls

MF Doom – “Hey!

from Dead Bent 12″ (Fondle ‘Em, 1997)
MF Doom f/ Megalon – “Greenbacks

MF Doom f/ Sci Fly – “Go With The Flow

from Greenbacks 12″ (Fondle ‘Em, 1998)

HipHopDX is running my Q&A with MF Doom. In the past I’ve criticized Doom for pandering to the man child cartoon network demographic but that approach makes more sense when you realize that dude is pretty damn childlike himself. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. He’s gushing about the differences between King Ghidra and MF Doom and offering endearingly hand in the cookie jar rationalizations for his show skipping and homo dissing. But there’s also a certain maturity and definite honesty the conversation. I didn’t expect him to be so candid.

Above are the original, superior 12″ mixes of tracks that were later re-recored for Operation: Doomsday.

Wow. Great read. Didn’t even know he did interviews, let alone one this candid. I don’t think I ever recall him talking so much out of character, as being the architect of all these personas.

Sidney Sheldon link to Operation Doomsday ? Weird

LOL @ how matter-of-fact these two lines sound:
“Pause, if you know the pause game”
“It’s not about homos. It’s about Batman and them. They just happen to be homos”

Thanks for the original mixes too. Dead Bent and Hey are waay up there in my list of favourite Doom tracks

i read this interview this morning when i saw it on 2dopeboyz.com…didnt know that you did it though…shit was a great read…congrats

you got him to talk about some stuff nobody would probably be able to

  3. Chyo! Says:

Chyo! I definitely think the album versions of those songs are superior to the 12 inch cuts, for what its worth.

the 12 inch versions are cool though, but i wouldn’t say “superior”

  4. ... Says:

Eh, the LP versions were much better and, yes, i did hear the 12″ versions first.

wow, u finally made it noz. congrats. op doomsday, goat. but everyone already knows that. as someone whos read this site for years now u really really really almost always hate on him. this is just funny. true professional tho. :-)

  9. Scribe Says:

He sounds more like Zev Love X than MF Doom on these versions (although I’ve heard one of them before). Anyway, the article is good, Noz.

  10. noz Says:

“wow, u finally made it noz. ”

    HA!

  11. Scott Says:

These 12″ versions are so much better. I was disappointed when I heard the rerecorded version of “Greenbacks” on Doom’s LP – the originals are just so raw. Thanks for these.

  12. quan Says:

just outta curiosity, did you get to interview him in-person? was he talking with his mask on or off? ie. was he speaking as DOOM or daniel dumile?

  13. Chef Rae Says:

and when he’s talking about his different characters did you get the feeling his ideas on the topic were premeditated or was he on some on the spot bullshit? I can’t tell based on the reading.

  14. yolo Says:

first time i saw the record , with the dr doom cartoon, i was like what is this gimmick album , i’m never getting it…
around the time there was a song i heard on stretch and bobbito show, didn’t know the artist but was looking all over for. ” hold mics like ni66s hold their girls tight ”

dead bent by MF DOOM… once i learned it was him i was @ fat beats getting it!

  15. noz Says:

Quan – I did this interview over the phone. Met dude without the mask a few years back. He looks exactly like he sounds, if that makes any sense.

Rae – It seemed like he was riffing.

  16. nick_sweepah Says:

    great stuff.

it’s inspiring to know that the man thinks like he raps, and is happy to just put it all out there.

    thanks noz.

  17. khal Says:

dope interview, Noz. been on a DOOM kick the last few weeks… Mm Food might be my favorite, if for nothing but “deep fried frenz”

  18. khal Says:

PS THANK YOU for the 320 rips of the vinyl versions. I loved the original 12″ version of Dead Bent over the CD version.

  19. KEYO Says:

yes the 12″ versions were way better, any chance of the instrumentals ?! ;)

  20. GROOVE Says:

Noz, you should have asked him about his vote for McCain. Did he do that to be in keeping with his character as a super-villain? (Or perhaps was he joking about that in the Rolling Stone interview?)

  21. Robbie Says:

    Top notch piece.

“Pause. If you play the pause game” Sure beats Hungry Hungry Hippos.

  22. nick_sweepah Says:

    NOW you finally made it;

    ha.

  23. Tray Says:

Is it me or does no one talk about the Vik Vaughn shit anymore? The first VV project was a great record to me, granted I may not like it as much these days.

  24. fresno Says:

so in his answer to the impostor question, he strongly suggests that he hires people to do his shows for him, and then backs up to the “i lost weight” argument.

and i think he kind of misses the point of live shows with that whole “don’t expect to see me, just hear me” thing. why bother with the stage, the impostor or the venue itself if shows are all about listening?
