if you see bun, ask him about the akon song.

  2. noz

“if you see bun, ask him about the akon song.”

As I understand it, Pimp wanted the Akon song on the record.

  3. ANU

    hmm…surprising.
I already had my “jive wants to fuck up a flawless album” conspiracy theory.

  4. apparently, albums aren’t dead, they just moved to the website.

  5. monique r.

I ride for the Akon song. Also, I don’t think it’s any mistake that this femme-bait comes after STEAL YOUR MIND.

    aww

Seems like Bun came better lyrically on this one than Underground Kings. Im trying to think of a group with a better discography than UGK and none are coming to mind. Any suggestions?

Razor bumps on your shaved pussy, bitch.

And frankly, I don’t think a less spotty discography exists in rap. Thats why it always stuns me that people write off them as some minor group, never mind the influence throughout the south. But then again, 95% of the rap listening world is retarded.

This album is a great ender to an unfortunate early end of, to me, the greatest rap group ever. I love how they split it up in two halves: the first undeniably Pimp C influenced shittalking content, and the other, of UGK side by side with his peers (sans Akon). I’ll inevitably wind up skipping the Akon track every time I listen to it, but it’s a bit more bearable given my tolerance for Akon shit, but otherwise this shit knocks from front to back. Definitely no Hi-Life, One Day, How Long Will It Last, Living This Life, etc. tracks, but I’m not mad at that. Cause UGK talking shit is inevitably 10x more interesting than most rappers trying to kick knowledge.

Rap would be a shitload better if every MC rapped with half the passion that Sweet James raps about pubic hair.

  10. i only listend to the first few tracks yet driving to uni.. what striked me the most is how i thought i heard pimp refering to the “baldhead cock”, i havent heard any post-2k raps refering to the vagine as cock, till now…

  11. Mike

Hugo, Devin the Dude still says it all the time. I can’t tell you how many times I’m singing along to him or Chad and my friends look at me like I’m… that way.

Man, TRUTH. Early to tell, but first listen has me believing that some of Pimp’s greatest verses might be on here.

    This album is unspeakably good.

Absolutely no other rap GROUP has this kind of discography. Very few rap artists, do, period.

    Scarface and…?

I mean we are talking six albums including one double disc with only a few minor missteps. The Akon song is probably the first UGK album track that I never want to hear again.

  14. u alreddy know whu i wud argue has a equally thowed discography mayn….

still havent listened to de album cuz im sick as fuck mayn feelin like shit…but im ridiculously excited fo it mayn!!!

  15. noz

Even you have to admit that consistency and quality control aren’t exactly Ro’s strengths.

  16. nah mayn.

Look what You Did To Me is a st8 fiyah hands down mayn, the two guerilla maab albums r incredible, Z-Ro Vs. The Wolrd plus alllll his RAL albums consistent front 2 back plus slept on joints like screwed up click representa, one deep, etc…de only album i wud say lacks de consistenty u come to know wit ro is power.

    Scarface and…?

    Ghostface.

  18. walkmasterflex

this track is great, i’m fucking psyched to hear the whole thing

  19. ghostface has been doing by-numbers raps for three albums now, fuck that

  20. akon has done a bunch of worthwhile rap tracks. dont know why this one is so shitty. ’soul survivor’ is a classic record.

  21. SukedowN

I know people favor the present, but let’s not forget about the Pimp and the Poet.

    Kast > UGK > Scarface

  22. Kyle

I dunno I would argue that Idlewild is a much weaker link in the otherwise stellar OutKast discography than anything UGK has ever put out.

  23. noz

Outkast has four great albums. Two solid solo albums. One irredeemable one.

  24. noz

Ghostface has four great albums. And then several mediocre ones.

And that’s a very generous estimate.

  25. Scarface has some mediocre albums that come to mind as well. The last two albums and “The World Is Yours” coming screaming to mind….

UGK didn’t become “great” until Bun B developed his signature flow around “Ridin’ Dirty.” They were extremely spotty in the beginning of their career. Some great stuff, some stuff that sounded generic Geto Boys.

As far as their new album, it’s very, very solid but it lacks that one kick ass signature song that keeps it from being great. I was pleasantly surprised though because I was expecting some Duets style bullshit pieced together fuckery or at best, an odds and ends album using leftovers from the last album. And I would bet a lot of money that this was originally supposed to be a Pimp C solo album until Pimp died and Bun/Jive released that they could make a hell of lot more money selling this as the final UGK album than as a posthumous Pimp C album. Bun seems to be barely on this thing. Still, I really enjoyed it.

Too Hard To Swallow is a solid debut but it’s worth noting that much of it was forcibly remixed by their label. Bun and Pimp never even heard the final mixes until they got the finished hard copy of the album. If you go back and listen to Southern Way you’ll hear that their sound was already pretty well developed and less “generic Geto Boys”.

Super Tight is a masterpiece, probably the best top to bottom production display of Pimp’s career. (And this again, despite the fact it’s actually the abbreviated version of a completed double album that was squashed by sample clearance issues.)

It almost seems like the group is placed at a disadvantage for taking the traditional not rap career trajectory of actually improving from one record to the next. At least on the first three joints.

Pimp C’s solo album is still scheduled to be released on Jive. I understand it will be a more r&b oriented record, or at least that was the plan originally.

  27. “and this again, despite the fact it’s actually the abbreviated version of a completed double album that was squashed by sample clearance issues.”

mayn hol up!! i guess we neva go hear de ress? apologies to Ridin Dirty but Supertight always gon be mah fav UGK.

  28. I’ve never understood the argument that Ghostface’s later albums are mediocre. I think his discography is almost top-to-bottom insanity. Even for Ghostface to be rapping in his formulaic mode requires him to be rapping with remarkable levels of technical proficiency, storytelling imagination, attention to detail, emotional honesty, and wit. That’s just his default mode. I love almost every single Ghostface album. There’s some lazy moments but I don’t buy the “Ghost has fizzled out” argument at all.

  29. Or, rather, I can see it (the last three records are a little slack at times), but I think it’s been WILDLY overstated. And I think the last one in particular is fucking great.

  30. noz

I think with Ghost it’s been a case of diminishing returns. Since Pretty Toney (which I thought was pretty great minus a few tracks) he’s been in a holding pattern. It’s not a fall off, he just doesn’t have the impact he once had.

  31. “I think with Ghost it’s been a case of diminishing returns. Since Pretty Toney (which I thought was pretty great minus a few tracks) he’s been in a holding pattern. It’s not a fall off, he just doesn’t have the impact he once had.”

But at the same time, you’re a big fan of the last two Scarface albums which if you follow your reasoning about Ghost being formulaic than Face’s last two albums definitely meet that criterion. Except Ghost’s album had four or five songs on each that were instant classics while Face’s not so much.

  32. the last two face albums are not at all formulaic …?

  33. i love ghost ironman thru pretty toney but scarface >>>> ghost always & forever

  34. ghost is way more reliant on gimmickry & wordplay where scarface gets by on dimension & personality

  35. DV

Pimp C’s solo album was supposed to be half-rapping/half-singing (like a non-shitty version of In My Mind I guess). Im just hoping there won’t be any Tom petty samples on there.

  36. A Charlie Brown Christmas

That Tom Petty sample was great.
