MAYNHOLUP!’s Ro Of The Week #1

For this new regular CB feature, I will be stepping aside to allow comment window gun buster and David Cronenberg enthusiast MAYNHOLUP! to put you up on some of his favorite tracks from “one of America’s most underrated rappers,” Z-Ro. Today he looks at you while you look at what you did to Ro. And then he looks at Cloverfield.

  3. Joe Abay

not to completely ignore your post, but I think somebody needs to address the lil wayne rock album.

  4. duncan

mayn, why do you choose to write “column” but then go with “doe”

  5. issssss MAYNHOLUP mayn! mayn luv me or hate me mayn i’m gon stay cheifin on de kill an bumpin Rotherfield mayn nah mean

  6. an nah mayn, i aint Noz. look fo me on de CanisHoopus.com threads if yall want proof, unless u thank Noz be a rapid TWolves fan mayn! KEVIN LOVE A BEAST MAYN

  7. I think we’re quickly reaching the point where Ro’s becoming one of America’s most overrated rappers. I mean, you can make a great case for him as best rapper of the past 5 years, you can also make a great case that he’s better than his most obvious influence (Pac), but that isn’t exactly saying much.

  8. I’m trippin that he produced all my favorite joints on Crack.

I would be interested in an expose on Z-Ro the producer, dude is mking some of the nicest beats on Earth.

  9. Söze

yall are trippin. crack was a great album, but yall cant rank it higher than his others. yall must peep his pre-rap-a-lot shit including guerilla maab, a.b.n., etc.

  10. Tray sometimes you post a lot of ‘controversial’ opinions but make them seem real boring

  11. barns

    great post mayn

  12. PEPYS

Tray – so what you’re saying is that Z-Ro’s so underrated he’s overrated?

  13. PEPYS

Also, I’m looking forward to more of this Mayn.

  14. MZA

    Cloverfield is dope..

  15. I think we’re rapidly approaching the point where noone gives a fuck what you say Tray mayn.

Bobby mayn, Ro be killin de production tip mayn i’ll try an find sum new shit to post bout it!

Soze: de reason Crack got so many votes is dat iss de newest wun i think and most people heard it compared to say Z-Ro Vs The World which is prolly better. Not takin nuttin away frum dat record doe I be fiendin fo dat shit on de daily mayn!

  16. mush

didn’t he have an album out in 2007 called Power or something like that???

  17. ketan

    wow

  18. Jez

Shit that was one fucking amazing track. I don’t know Ro that well, only a few older tracks here and there but Crack was dope and I try to get hold of as much of his stuff as possible. Nice post mayn.

  19. noz

    “So, Mayn = Noz?”

No. Unless my DID has gotten so bad that I am unknowingly setting up .edu email accounts for my alter egos.

  20. ross

that would actually be a pretty legit domain…and i wish i could edit these comments so i wouldn’t have to double up.

  21. rkm

If he’s got a .edu domain, that writing has to be an affectation he’s put on. Probably someone from the suburbs playing a part…

  22. Deej, rap is boring, life is boring. Basically I feel like Ro’s undoubtedly one of the best artists we have around right now, but we also have about 2 good artists around right now (Gucci Mane does not count), and yeah, way too few people out there in the world know Ro’s work, but on the other hand, every third rap blog post is about him, he’s the only southern rapper many east coast snob morons even listen to, so out on the Internets/among people who know anything about rap, the guy’s not exactly underrated anymore.

  23. noz

Rkm – Just playing devil’s advocate because you might be right, but exactly what level of education renders slang or regional accents inauthentic? I remember Byron did an XXL post about how David Banner speaks that was along the same lines. Personally, I’m usually against it in writing, though I’ve found MAYN’s comments entertaining enough to make an exception. The assumption being that he’s writing in his speaking voice.

Tray – you really need to understand that the general hip hop audience extends well beyond the seven people you talk to on the internet.

  24. noz mayn u righ on both accounts mayn.

first off fuck all yall actin like cuz i say mayn like dis i must be an idiot. mayn im smarter den all yall fuck outta here mayn. yes dis is how i speak mayn it dunnit mean i dont know how to write grammatically correct mayn. DIS ME MAYN!

fuck dis whole “is Noze really Maynholup” question mayn im boutta start askin if Tray is really Tom Breihan!! and dass not a complement either mayn

  25. walkmasterflex

“fuck dis whole “is Noze really Maynholup” question mayn im boutta start askin if Tray is really Tom Breihan!! and dass not a complement either mayn”

    ahaha

  26. last point ima make mayn: DIS NOT ABOUT ME MAYN! DIS BOUT RO!

Tray u say Ro shows up every third blog post…MAYN HOL UP!!!! dis column righ here de first time i seen Ro come up in a rap blog in bout….a year mayn. Rother need ta get all de press in de world mayn an im thankful to de homie noz righ here for hookin dis up cuz he know i know and we know it’s Z-Ro all day everyday

  27. rkm

Noz – It’s not being educated and using slang that got me wondering. It’s that jumping in and out of a “voice” so easily within a sentence that made me suspicious. Like if I wrote “I think this post is a bit suspcious ‘n y’all best reckn’ that I am going to say so,” well, how out of place does the middle part of that sentence look compared to the rest of it? Wouldn’t you wonder about whether I’m playing things up a bit at least a little?

Mayn – It’s your voice, so if you’re writing how you talk, then I gotta take your word for it, and really who am I to judge. Thanks for posting the song anyways.

  28. iss all good mayn stay bumpin dat ROTHERFIELD mayn!

  29. that’s some good Ro, mayn.

  30. noz

Rkm – Really? I think dudes voice is pretty damn consistent…

  31. SukedowN

I think there is a “Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid.” cross-reference floating around here somewhere.

  32. SukedowN

This song reminds me that a Wish-Bone/Z-Ro collabo could be literally, the greatest thing to ever happen to hip-hop.

  33. I’m already looking forward to the next column, mayn.

  34. raggamuffin airhorn

i just gotta say that the name z-ro itself is a pretty amazing rap name….ESPECIALLY considering that the man(mayn?)’s name has neither a Z nor a RO in it (assuming his gov’t name is joseph w. mcvey- i have no idea really)…he just really likes the number zero! me too! and don’t even get me started on the nickname rother vandross. classic.

  35. tHe tRaNsIeNt

u a trill ass mayn, mayn

dis da real rebirth of cocaineblunts right chea
    jo$eph
and dis makes up for tha debacle of faggits like david drake, sodomberg etc debating homosexuality in rap on hea last year
    u see whut im sayin?

i just looked at tryhard-tray’s blog
ayo tray – u tha vaguelly neccessary annoying contrarian geeky faggit with tha shitty opinions in multiple blog comment sections and, 2 a degree, your schtick works
but whoever told u it was a good idea for u 2 start your own blog 4 u 2 ramble on and literally beg 4 tha attention of breihan and sodomberg
well, dey lied 2 u, mayn

  36. dq

    dass dat Ro!

  37. ah mayn de Transient dat dude righ der!!!

  38. can all words with long “o” sound be converted into “Ro” puns? ROcaine blunts & hiphop tapes

  39. noz

    “Sodomberg.”

  40. co-sign on ROcaine Blunts mayn!

  41. E AKA THE REAL NORIEAGA

no homo but MAYNHOlDUP!’s my favorite poster

  42. @ raggamuffin airhorn: I think the name ‘z-ro’ is a little too obviously apt for a rapper who’s renowned for his bleakness. Dude inserts a bit of self doubt and loathing into his own rap name. Yeesh.

Anyways, I personally would be more interested in reading MaynHolup’s views on diverse issues that aren’t Ro-related, and how those things all somehow relate to Ro. Ex, Maynholup on the economy, Gardening tips from Mayn, Mayn on movies (ROger Ebert?)

But I haven’t heard those first couple of Z-Ro albums, so I dont mind an education.

Obviously looking forward to more columns from mayn – this shit has got me sayin’..umm umm…oh, what’s the word?….

  43. SukedowN

    TRANSIENT=MAYNHOLDUP

So obvious. Does every commenter have an alter-ego? I should make one. Not sure whether to make it psuedo-enlightened or all ig’nant.

  44. boi-dan

    ????? the f*ck???

  45. Nashvillain

as hot as this track is, it neither had me saying “man hold up” or “that is that rother”. furthermore, maynholdup’s over the top forcing of his vernacular on to the keyboard is ineffably unbearable. I’m not saying you need a degree to participate in intelligent music discourse, but i’m not saying you need to force your accent at gunpoint on the world when mostly it is an poorly implemented Kaufman act. Please say this will be the only time this clown writes on your site, or i’ll have to find my Hip Hop Elitism somewhere else.

  46. My dad got called “Sodomy-berg” back when he used to be a truckdriver.

Also, I’d be surprised if there’s anywhere where I’ve done anything but celebrate rappers’ homophobia

  47. d. b. cooper

I would just like to point out that the phrase “ineffably unbearable” is, itself, ineffably unbearable.

  48. MAYNHOLUP! is killin’ em! Go hard, son!

  49. who the fuck is this dude w my name in his mouth

  50. is ‘the transient’ this dude ‘david’:
    http://www.cocaineblunts.com/blunts/?p=1009

i wasnt getting in no debates about homosexuality in rap, i was telling your bigoted ass to stfu

  51. outstanding work in here.
also: “KEVIN LOVE A BEAST MAYN”
    funniest part.

  52. tHe tRaNsIeNt

    i aint no david, drake
but yr skatin’ on tha very thin ice here, drake

    u see whut im sayin?

  53. Kevin Love is a fuckin beast mayn u need ta fall back

  54. sounds like u have something u want to say tho

  55. >>>I would just like to point out that the phrase “ineffably unbearable” is, itself, ineffably unbearable.

    lol

  56. this is so necessary.
    that rothlympics.

  57. SukedowN

K-Love is one of the softest players in the whole Association.

  58. Mac Merl

  59. djao

  60. iluvlindz
