Unreleased (199?)
Fatlace has been running a great series of Trenton Rap interviews talking to Tony D, YZ and Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers. Here are a pair of supplemental diss records.
First “Get Off The Rhythm,” a vocal cut from Tony’s breakbeat album Music Makes You Move where Tone and YZ call out Lakim Shabazz, Big Daddy Kane and Gang Starr for using the “In Control Of Things” Vicki Anderson sample (legend has it that “Get Off The Rhythm” inspired Guru’s “you can’t own no loops” message on “Take It Personal.”)
And then an otherwise unreleased YZ track that Tony gave me a few years ago, where they throw a few barbs at Naughty By Nature and Poor Righteous Teachers. The story goes that Naughty jacked a track from Music Makes You Move for the Jackson 5 loop that would become “OPP.” The YZ/PRT beef goes back to their indie days, where YZ’s Diversity Records shelved their 12″. I’m not sure how Tony can justifiably be rapping on a track where his own crew gets dissed, but that’s just Trenton for you. It sounds like this might have been recorded after “Crocodile Dundee,” YZ’s tamer, official PRT diss.

finally, something good…..thanks for that.

Nos, you should’ve talked about thug matrimony in 2004. Because in 2009 it’s still a good album. The change of subject matters, from a song to another, is more paradoxal than Nas’ albums but they’re great nonetheless.

Thug Matrimony was real strange but not very good.
I’m eagerly anticipating your thoughts on Prom Queen…

“I’m eagerly anticipating your thoughts on Prom Queen…”
I hate it.

thanks for these!

Prom Queen is a steaming pile of shit! Worse than the worst of autotune Weezy.

Oh, I think it’s surprisingly okay, though extremely cookie-cutter – you know, sounds like he bought a How To Make Rock Songs For Dummies book and just followed the manual. But as poorly as he’s been rapping of late he might as well take a break.

You continue to amaze me Tray.

I mean, I just don’t give a fuck what Wayne does with his little autotune machine at this point. Maybe with this album he’ll get this crap out of his system and go back to being our generation’s Busta Rhymes.

Tony came off a bit on “Get Off…”
what inspired Fatlace’s great series, other than the motto on the Lower Free Bridge? and why aren’t there any up and coming Trenton rappers to post about?

“why aren’t there any up and coming Trenton rappers to post about?”
I’ve often wondered about that. Kilogram, who had a pretty good record with Peedi a few years back (I think I posted the video here) is apparently signed to Atlantic now. His new shit is sounding a little generic. But I mean, what could/should a successful central jersey rapper even sound like in 2008?

I’d like to see some artists expand upon the jamaican influence in the city the way prt, etc did. But I mean, otherwise what happens in Trenton that would set it apart? It’s not like anyone from philly or nyc or the bricks or anywhere else in the tri state area are really blowing right now either. Why would a smaller market do otherwise?

“what could/should a successful central jersey rapper even sound like in 2008?”
that song “Jersey” on his myspace is the wrong approach. mentioning the older NJ rappers from bigger cities just makes trenton seem even more irrelevant. besides some better beats, his songs need to have some sense that he, you know, comes from trenton. whether through mentioning going to Thunder games or building on the Jamaican influence of prt et al. (though isn’t that a little outdated at this point), he needs to give people where he’s from a reason to support him, as that buzz will carry him the furthest. he also needs a sick-ass clique.

I don’t think the world is ready for Trenton Thunder Rap.
January 27th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
maybe so, but Boomer > any weedcarrier the past 5 years.

actually the track that naughty by nature jacked for opp is from the same record as get off the rhythm

The other rapper on “Dummy Move” is B Fine/BeFyne from B Fine and the Funk Family, Trenton staples in the early 90s. He’s now recording as Bobbie Fine and has a guest spot on the latest X Clan album.
