Ultramagnetic All-Star Weekend Freestyle

Ultramagnetic MCs – “NBA All Stars
from Smack My Bitch Up (Tuff City, 1998; recorded, 1989)

So my emo heads were crying when I didn’t do a Valentine themed post. Not to worry, today cocaine blunts is celebrating this weeks other major holiday – NBA All Star Weekend.

Here’s a nice long Ultramagnetic all star session from ‘89 where they dedicate a few bars to every player over a medley of classic Ultra beats. ex – karl malone / the mailman / so understand he’s in command / the way he runs and slams with authority / he is the utah jazz top priority / you know why? / ’cause he’s an all star!

I’m pretty sure this was officially sanctioned by the NBA and aired during the game. Which is crazy to think that Ultra was getting that kind of attention.

I do know that it was one of the worthwhile cuts on a series of otherwise bootleg late 90s Ultramagnetic cash ins from Tuff City, who Ced Gee sold a bunch of masters for crack money

Don’t forget we got Cocaine Blunts radio tonight 8-10 EST. Listen live online at gwradio.com.

    That’s a nice track by Ultramags here’s a a few other Basketball type songs…

    Basketball – Kurtis Blow
    Now You’re Mine – Gangstarr
Soul In The Hole – Wu-tang All Stars

  2. todd Says:

that’s awesome. they should get ghostface and mf doom to do it this year.

  3. obi Says:

man that Kurtis Blow joint was the soundtrack to my youth. used to practise my moves to it on the regular

    whatever happened to him though?

  4. dame Says:

is mf doom the new kool keith?

    debate…

  5. dame Says:

seriously, doesn’t this make keith’s “a message to the NBA” off of spankmaster all the more ironic?

he’s taking hoopers to task for being bad parents, having entourages, etc…

so now he was once on the nba payroll, technically?

  6. noz Says:

in order for that arguement to hold weight it would require someone somewhere to have actually heard ’spankmaster’

  7. chronwell Says:

I own Spankmaster and it aint bad especially Jealous!

  8. noz Says:

there’s no way that records good.

  9. duncan Says:

i cannot believe that there is ten minutes of this. there’s a fucking shoutout to the trainer for christ’s sake. it also sounds like someone else wrote their rhymes.

  10. faux_rillz Says:

    Noz–

Why you gotta hate on “Spankmaster” like that?

I dunno man, it gets to a point where every comment about modern hip hop boils down to you or paychecks dictating what’s hot in “the streets” and dissing whoever likes kool keith, or doesn’t like beanie sigel or whatever. like i said, i usually agree with you guys from the quality perspective, but if dudes want to talk about shitty underground hip hop just let it happen.

  11. noz Says:

well faux, it’s just that i would say the audience with whom ’spankmaster’ primarily connects is one which barely listens to rap at all.

  12. Robbie Says:

Didn’t Ced Gee sell Tuff City those songs? Moe’s no crackhead. Ced on the other hand….

  13. beez luva Says:

i think the lyrics were written by Partners In Rhyme.

I think “Lenny Wilkens” is a better opening than Guru’s “Stupid” so that means this song wins an award.

What audience does Spankmaster have? Keith had lost me about 10 albums before that so i don’t have any concept of what it sounds like, I jsut remember the cover.

    YEAH cos he’s an allstar!

  14. noz Says:

    true robbie, my error.

  15. Rob Says:

The Ultra MCs sure had a thing for sports… I recall there being a baseball tune by them too?

  16. noz Says:

    yes

  17. fonzie Says:

Could you please take down your “Happy Holiday’s” splash page?

  18. noz Says:

could you please update your link to cocaineblunts.com?

  19. Anonymous Says:

lol, I had a similar issue, only noticed that it was different when I logged in from work….over a month ago

  20. MAAD Says:

Kurtis Blow is doing radio these days…His son is getting in the busines now…

  21. pete Says:

I think Kurtis Blow has found God and is preaching in raps now. Supposed to be the first rapping Rev. I saw an article in the Daily News about it a few months ago. They had a pic with some snowfake porn star on his lap. But it said how he was now reformed and preaching in rhymes. Im just waiting on his Hammer-esc infomerical.

  22. cole Says:

anyone know the rap song about football that opens the movie wildcats? i thought that was pretty nice. i think there’s a live performance of it in the movie too. it’s not on the soundtrack though.

  23. noz Says:

it’s called ‘football’ by ll. i don’t know where it ended up if it’s not on the soundtrack. maybe it was exclusive to the movie?

  24. rio rocket Says:

none of the ‘lyrics’ sites are confirming my fading memory of Blow rapping these words…

Where is this basketball line from?

‘to capitalize on their mistakes / to run and gun on the fast breaks’

  25. farns Says:

Ced is coming back and he’s off the crack. He has a new LP out soon and has started a new label. I can’t find the link though. Did you know
Ultra are reformed and are planning to do a gig in the UK? I’m not holding my breath though.

  26. sally Says:

my error= the new my bad. go noz yes!

  27. dame Says:

i like the following artist very much.. kool keith; yukmouth, andre (dre dog) nickatina; keak the sneak; pre-gospel agerman, shit all 3x; outkast; souls; and recently doom.

    gangster hippies rule.. Discuss

  28. dame Says:

wasn’t El doradoes on that spankmaster too? Tight!

LEATHER JACKET LIKE RALO. and you call jigga the best rapper alive.. why is kool keith commenting on the vh1 race o rama series…. him and jim jones are HILARIOUS no lie.. peep that

  29. noz Says:

jigga calls himself the best rapper alive. i’m just echoing that statement.

  30. AJ Raffles Says:

Quote: “Where is this basketball line from?

‘to capitalize on their mistakes / to run and gun on the fast breaks’?”

That’s from the “‘NBA’ Rap” by Hurt ‘Em Bad – certified wickedness.

HEB did a few* sports related tracks e.g. “Monday Night Football”, “The Boxing Game” (w/ The SC Band) etc.

    *exclusively

I like it when he goes “Hurt ‘Em Bad will be a famous word”. Nice counting, fella.

    Peace
    A J

  31. ABEL Says:

kool keith should never ever have picked up a mic. he is clost to the worst emcee i’ve ever heard. the only reason i even own any of his vocals in the same apartment i sleep in, is because of the Dan the Automator shit. Umags was dope because of circumstance primarily, and only secondarily because of talent.
