I think he is. Much of it comes down to something you mentioned when you reviewed Made: The fact that he’s still growing and his work is still moving in interesting directions. “Who Do You Believe In?” was the greatest fucking thing I’d heard in ages and I loved its ragged, torn-out-from-the-insides quality. Plus ‘Face talking about international affairs with that righteous wronged-man’s tone is too good.
He has competition though: I’m one of those dudes who’s still cheerleading Toney Starks, even though most rap nerds seem to have quieted down after Big Doe Rehab. I don’t give a fuck, that album was fucking great and so is more or less everything else he’s been doing.
Killer Mike will keep making his case. And then there’s Andre. I’m sure there’s cats I’m forgetting. If we wanted to make it an even top five, who could we pick? I don’t know.
