Spell It With A G But Not With An E

MC Holiday – “Gucci Man

from Gucci Man 12″ (Fever, 1986)

Gucci Crew II – “Gucci Man

from G4 LP (Hot, 1990)

Gucci Mane – “My Plug Is An Alien

from the internet (2008)

I frequently get reader email asking for more Gucci Mane (Seriously. Gucci fans won’t leave me alone.) Sorry guys. Truth be told, I have been trying to boycott the recently reincarcerated trapstar until he does his namesake right with a proper cover of MC Holiday’s “Gucci Man”. That record was so monumental that Slick Rick impersonator MC Holiday had no choice but to become the character for life (or at least for one more sucky 12″ before disappearing forever). Come to think of it Holiday/OG Gucci and his modern day sucessor have something of a shared sense of humor – tell me you couldn’t hear Gooch Laflair talking about “it smelled like dead fish”.

Another possible interpolation opportunity : Gucci Crew II’s “Gucci Man”. Or anything from their catalog, really. Do the Gucci legacy right when you come home. And forward a cut of the royalties to the Cocaineblunts needs a new cartridge charity fund.

Does Gucci have any talent at all? If you pulled a random homeless guy off the street and gave him Gucci’s beats to rap over, would the album he’d make be significantly worse than Gucci’s album? Maybe a little worse, but not significantly. Like the guy just brings nothing to the table, and he’s so dumb that I’m convinced listening to him kills brain cells. I’m a huge Jeezy (and even Rick Ross) fan but at some point between him and Plies there’s a line between fun ignorance and fucking ignorant ignorance.

damn alchemist still insists he’s a rapper huh…lil homie should have hung it up after ‘different worlds’…

and gucci ain’t that lyrical, no breaking news. but when he strings together a little wordplay on the right zay production he’s got a sound. dude’s just got a ridiculous amount of mixtape shit out right now. you gotta deal with a lot of throw-aways but he’s got some joints out this year.

You’re right about there still being die hard Gucci Crew Fans. That og print they got is totally sick. Not to mention I see Free Gold Watch using the Gucci Crew design on the back of their tags. Sick!

    @JUMP:

i thought alc’s flow worked really well on this one. i think he knows he’s not a god-status mc, but on certain beats (yes, ‘different worlds’) he’s effective.

besides, his “acting” on the intro of this joint is just perfect.

Until I actually listen to the Holiday song, which will be during day time while not sleepy drunk, I’ll have enormous problems aprahending any artist/group with Gucci in their name making better music then either Gucci Crew or Gucci Mane. Unthinkable.

“Gucci Bandana” by Gucci Mane comes close to paying homage to MC Holiday. Similarly, he just rattles off a bunch of things that he owns that are Gucci – or have Gucci print on them. Like bandanas. “I’m Gucci Mane, you would think that was my clothing line…”

Anyway, how are you gonna give MC Holiday a pass for stealing Slick Rick’s British accent, but not give Gucci a pass for apparently naming himself for a 12″ this guy put out?

    In short, Free Gucci.

man yall are just not feelin guccis flow, be real with it.

yeah, a lot of the shit he says is silly, and he has a few garbage tracks, but he also has some of the illest beats out right now (yes i will sign for that) and some of the shit he says is hilarious and clever. its not even about the lyrics to me so much as how hes flowin “shawty hotta than a hippopotamus in the sahara with a rump like a rhinoceros just like takara”

what can i say, the dudes unique. hes a bit goofy but i’m feelin him especially that “recipe” with bun b. the streets are lovin those mixtapes seem to be comin out weekly…
