David Banner – “When You Hear What I Got To Say“
This is the DB the world needs, not the sell out chris brown rap-is-my-job pansy club bullshit. You’re damn right, you gave Universal all that you got. You’re never going to be a pop star, no matter how many faceless and unmemorable trend hopping hits you chart with. Time to make some art.
Hopefully this is a taster for his “acid blues hip hop” album, 13.

Even when he’s not selling out, he’s such a more intelligent interview/Congressional hearing witness than he is a rapper.

I’m not really looking for intelligence as much as passion.

What the fuck did Tavis Smiley say? He’s usually pretty defensible.

Well yeah, the passion is there, but you listen to him talk and you’d think he could be a really great lyricist.

I actually like that Chris Brown song but I get your point: a pop-star he will never be. I don’t even get his “strategy” or w/e, wasnt Like A Pimp succeful? While still being fire. I still think Cadillacs on 22’s and the last song on the first album where he raps about Bush, Fire Falling, is his finest work to date.

I keep hoping that Banner drops some real talk over a COMPLETE LP, because so much of it is just sporadic enough to justify checking a project, but not enough to really recommend it. Even “Certified” had some ridiculous jams on it (”On Everything” was one of the best emptyheaded Twista songs ever), but DB could do way better. “Grey Skies” and “Mississippi” were borderline classics of a genre that may or may not exist. Now, as the record industry is crumbling to a staggering degree, it seems like he’s finally got a window to launch a career STRICTLY as the conscious hood rapper. Not in a Talib Kweli way, but in a “Trick Daddy that also reads books” sort of way. I don’t wanna be bored, but I wouldn’t mind being taught some shit while my trunk bothers the neighbors…

I’m pretty sure Trick Daddy reads books. But yeah.

I don’t know……… it’s good he’s back to having substance, but he went hella astray. Him & Kamikaze made their bones early on buy having a hard album with plenty of social themes. This is how they ate early on. The HBCU community in Mississipi & Tennesee kept these guys fed back in the day by inviting these guys to speak b/c of their policital views, etc…
So he attempts to sell out b/c his album wasn’t going gold, then fails and then trys to come back………

banner needs to get off these jesus bullshit. I like the dude but really fuck that god shit. It annoys the fuck shit out of me when he brings up that shit. I saw him on thursday and he ran off with some bullshit speech about keeping god in schools. If you want to believe in fairy tales keep that ridiculous nonsense out to yourself.

When DB gets in the mood for saying something that is on his mind-it’s usually the time when he can come up with some pretty good music with major reflections. I consider this song to be his “Intro” of more things to come.
Keep in mind, he makes much of his music based on a whim, I suspect, and not necessarily to hop from trend to trend. When he does the trend thing, it might be to pay his bills. In his heart, he might want to still talk about things on his mind, and determined to pay bills and pay dues, too.
When you have a conscious rapper who rapped consciously like Banner did early on, such consciousness is a part of his soul, and it doesn’t die away. After the bills get paid with the hit songs, Banner is left with his thoughts, and when he feels the need to express his deepest ones, he spits fire.
This song is a little warm, I figure by in a little while, he’ll be all fire.
David Banner is one whimsical dude, musically and still full of substance. He shouldn’t be underestimated at all.
