The Macadamian Nut

6 Two – “Weed An Snortin“
6 Two f/ Devin – “Devin & I“
6 Two f/ Attitude – “Letz Get High“
from Mac-A-Roni & G’s (Underground, 2005)
Not to be confused with the Anticon guy, the Fort Worth 6 Two has brushed elbows with fame for the last decade but probably will never go further than that. He was originally a member of the group Gena Cide, who cut a pair of albums in the 90s. (I’ve only heard the first one, but it’s real solid, rootsy southern hip hop in the Odd Squad vein.) Presumably through The DOC connection, he linked up with Dre and wrote and performed on a few 2001 tracks. He was supposed to record an album for Aftermath, but you know how albums for Aftermath go. The DOC’s scatologically titled but slept on none the less comeback album Deuce was effectively 6 Two’s solo project. Somewhere around the same time he started working with Timbaland, coming in at the tail end of the Beat Club era only to fall to the wayside once Timbaland realized that making cheesy retro futurist pop music was a more profitable endeavor than making great hip hop.
This underground is the only proper 6 Two solo record, as far as I can tell. And it took FOREVER to get a hold of a copy. It’s sort of a spotty affair, with a few tracks salvaged from both the Timbo and Dre sessions as well as some loose cuts including one from Jazze Pha. You can tell he must’ve slipped out of the studio early with these tracks early in the production process, they sound cool but don’t really have the sheen that either producer is known for. The Dre produced “Weed and Snortin’” predates Lupe’s usage of the Wallace Collection / I Monster “Daydream” sample. If any 60s pop psych record was begging to be screwed and chopped it was probably this one. “Letz Git High” is some nice middle period Timbo shit, if a little generic sounding. It also features Attitude who was another talented Beat Club casualty, though I think he still writes for Timb from time to time. “Devin & I” is a record with Devin, appropriately.
The last I heard of 6 Two he had cut an album with ex-Rap-A-Lot Big Mike. The video, “Down Home“, was one of the best of ‘06 and seemingly a youtube only release. According to this 6 Two interview that album will be coming out independently next year. Gena Cide has reunited and are recording a new album as well.

Controversial Thesis: Timbo never really made any great hip-hop (outside of a few songs with Jay) and didn’t know how; he’s better off making “cheesy futuristic pop,” although Nelly Furtado is no Aaliyah and JT is really no Ginuwine.

“Timbo never really made any great hip-hop (outside of a few songs with Jay)”
1. not that controversial, ppl say that shit all the time and its kinda boring at this pt
2. and i still disagree … ryde or die bitch, raise up, roll out, ching ching, u cant resist (and a gang of other missy ones – if u still think missy’s an R&B artist or whatever reason you need to disqualify her, there are plenty of eminem/redman/luda guest spots for it to qualify as ‘rap’)
3. dont know why ‘few songs with jay’ are not counted considering joints like ’snoopy track’ and ‘big pimpin’ are hands down classic rap beats
never mind the 2-6 track that inspired your CHALLENGING OPINION in the first place
obviously hes first and foremost an R&B producer, but as a rap producer he definitely has some classics.

what about his songs with luda? “phat rabbit” is pretty sick. even the intro to Red Light District was nice. and bubba sparxxx’s deliverance is a very good album.

Yeah, he made some very good singles with a select group of rappers that knew what to do with his beats. I’m just saying, I don’t think producing rap was really his calling.

thank you very much for this.
6 2 is on to the top of the list of rappers who should have made it in a much bigger way.
deuce material = classic.

I always figured there was gonna be someone who hears Justin and wishes it was Ginuwine. It’s just you though, no matter how much Justin isn’t Michael, and I’ve PAID for Ginuwine records.

was there a better verse, on chronic 2001, than his on xxplosive?

Hamadi – The phrase “You can give me some head / but keep the breakfast in bed / I’d rather spend my morning digging through some records instead” comes to mind.
