Wayne’s World: Canceled

Lil Wayne – “Pussy, Money, Weed

from The Carter 3 Sessions (Unreleased, 2007)

This was going to be Wayne’s Week at CB. I am talking Sqad Up retrospectives, photoshop madness, ticker tape parades, etc. I even prepared a mock up banner for the occasion. But then Wayne burn out began to set in. The publicity blitz for this record has just been excessive. I don’t even want to look at his ugly mug right now. (Also I’m lazy.) So I’ll fall back for the time being, maybe Waynes Week will come when you least expect it.

I did upload the new-to-me “Pussy Money Weed”, discovered on one of the many Carter 3 extras compilations that have been floating around. Wayne was talking up his “Jazzy Belle” remake last year, but I never knew it actually leaked. He doesn’t ruin it. These are the type of space age ballads Wayne needs to make. “Comfortable” doesn’t cut it.

Other notable Wayneisms:

MGG has an interesting Wayne post up. Most of Wayne’s recent press acknowledges both his child star roots and his current human oddity status, but very few writers actually connect the line between the two. Hopefully he won’t touch Jacko (ayo) levels of insanity but we shall see.

Toshitaka Kondo interviews the C3 production team @ Rhapsody. Deezle apparently thinks Eddie Kendricks is a woman.

The New York Times’ Jon Pareles weighs in on C3. Those of you constantly complaining that best music writer alive Kelefa Sanneh leaned too far to the popist left can rest assured that the Times seems headed back towards relatively clunky and loosely informed old white folks rap criticism in his absence. “Now he’s headed for radio.” Really? They play the rap music on the radio now? I think it’s safe to assume that we’re not going to be seeing many more Turf Talk or All Star features in The Grey Lady.

On the topic of clunk relativity and old white folks, I too take on the album over at NPR.

Bonus Zshares for those of you who actually read this far. “Whip It”, while not a Devo cover, is some serious brains unchained shit. The other joints are whatever, and this is coming from someone who enjoyed the original “Prostitute”.

Heard that Pussy, Money, Weed joint last year when it dropped on one of the gazillion tapes Wayne dropped in ‘07, thanks for the other links. C3 could never possibly live up to its hype, but I have to say I’m not as disappointed as I could have been. Still, 500 Degreez, The Carter, C2, shit even Tha Block Is Hot are all better Wayne albums.

  2. wayne.

    or the joker perhaps?

Not to go too off topic but has anyone been watching BET Now lately? the show where they play videos for two hours. I think BET sucks balls, put between commercials I flip it on to check the videos. Anyways. they have been showing the same BET Now from 2006 everyday for about 2 months now. Its nothing but Busta Rhymes ‘I love my bitch’ over and over again. That’s my version of hell.

  4. bet??? u mean Brainwashing Every Teen?????

turn that shit off homie and while yer at it the radio too

  5. Tray

You really think he deserves a whole week?

  6. noz

He certainly has recorded enough material to justify it.

So has Tragedy Khadafi and unlike Wayne’s, most of it is good. No, in all seriousness, Wayne’s a really virtuosic rapper, and I’m not one of those people who makes lists of Wayne’s worst punchlines (my favorite’s “I got power, just like a forward”), but I do feel he’s horribly overrated, and here’s why: no range. Compare him to T.I., for instance. Now T.I., we both agree, isn’t anything that special, but he can do quite a bit – wistful, bravado, angry, sensitive, thug, guilt, romantic, misogynist, funny, dead serious, schizoid, and so on. You don’t have to be in a certain mood to listen to T.I. Wayne, on the other hand, tries to fit into all of those boxes, but he always comes off the same way – funny, high, random Wayne. He can kind of do bravado, but only in a very eccentric way; he’s surprisingly good at the romantic stuff, but it still all comes down to his nutty pick-up/punchlines. If T.I. did a song about “Army Gunz,” it’d be threatening; with Wayne, it’s just an excuse to try out a new flow. If you didn’t know English, you’d probably think he was rapping about how high he was. The only reason anyone listens to Wayne is to hear what bizarre shit he’ll say next. As such, all he can ever really do is make ephemera, because after you hear his latest crazy punchlines and flows 1, 2, 3 times, you really aren’t left with much. There’s no emotive content there, or very little anyway.

“So has Tragedy Khadafi and unlike Wayne’s, most of it is good.”

Tray is the Joe Pantoliano of the Thug Matrix.

  9. so i can understand if you dont count block is hot as a solo and i never heard 500 degreez but i think that u have his album number wrong. not that shit matters in the website that ur review is on.

  10. I still would’ve liked a Cocain Blunts Wayne week. Also, good call on Jon Pareles, he’s pretty terrible; I remember his ‘Graduation’ review was similarly retarded and it’s not like Kanye West is even that hard to “get” or whatever.

I agree T.I. has WAAAAAY more range than Wayne, but I think Tray might have underrated him. T.I. at his best (”I Still Ain’t Forgave Myself,” “Countdown,” “Kingofdasouth,” “No Matter What,” imho) is one of the best in the game. Still, ain’t nobody touching Andre 3K, best rapper alive, bet that.

  12. The problem with TI is that he’s not very smart or like, introspective, while Wayne, full of purple or not is. ‘No Matter What’ is this song where he basically puts all his problems on someone else, never cops to anything, and bigs himself up for doing what he was supposed to do.

  13. sounds like a chris rock kind of argument.

your interpretation of the song means he isn’t responsible, not that he isn’t smart. and in that case, I would say TI and Wayne are quite similar. but I say TI is smarter, not that it really matters.

“Now T.I., we both agree, isn’t anything that special”

    seriously???

“The problem with TI is that he’s not very smart or like, introspective, while Wayne, full of purple or not is.”

    SERIOUSLY?????

  15. Fuck Wayne vs. T.I. vs. Tragedy vs. whoever, let’s talk Kelefa Sanneh vs. Jon Caramanica vs. Sasha Frere Jones vs. Tom Breihan vs. Dave Tompkins vs. Hua Hsu vs. Noz vs. whoever. Better yet, let’s get a rap critic fantasy league going.

i heard nick sylvester was recently signed by wire mag :-O

Looks like Pitchfork gave Wayne a 8.7. Its not usual for them to get swept up in the hype. I was expecting them to give him something like a 6. This album is not as good as the past Carter’s but in a weird way is a lot more accessible. The production tends to mellow out Wayne’s insane ramblings. I can’t even to begin to think if he had some New Orleans bounce production sped up to 120 bpm with a bunch of lasers on it and shit.

  18. nam

    totally agree baz….

Personally i liked Da Drought 3 better. But the non-cleared nature of the sampling and the quickness of it’s ‘release’ had a lot to do with that.
While Carter III may not be the hoped for coronation i think that is partly because over the length of it’s delay we have come to just accept his ’status’.
    He is here…
Even with his auto-tune warbles and T-Payne guitar picking.
And i love the Dr. Carter track. It reminds me of an track of of Heltah Skeltah’s first or second album…
Which was a skit/rap over the same theme.

    i meant to write…
“It reminds me of an track off of Heltah Skeltah’s first or second album…
Which was a skit/rap over the same theme.”

Also the song to which i refer was called Therapy off of Nocturnal.
