Zshares: Little Lupe Thundercat Rap Jam Vol. 1

Charles Hamilton – “Where’s My Fucking Genesis?
Spree Wilson – “Word

Quasi-hipsters stay rapping under their government name. Should I thank Kanye West for this? Or Obie Trice? Either way, two of them here indulge in a sixteen bit strain of Thundercatrap that seems slightly more genuine than sampling European trance or hand me down nostalgia via the Clipse. I imagine most of these kids actually grew up on video games.

Charles Hamilton of Cleveland Harlem (though his myspace said otherwise) has nothing to do with this guy and spells the word psychedelic with an “o”. But, as a still-own-a-Saturn motherfucker (posse on dorkwatch), I feel a need to acknowledge what may be the first time someone has actually spit over a Sonic The Hedgehog beat. Well, Del, another Sega apologist, probably did at some point, but I always found his forays into video game rap less childhood nostalgia and more old man talking mod chips type creepy.

Speaking of Del, Atlanta’s Spree Wilson raps a little like his unsigned and imaginary half brother Unicron. I guess that is a better look than autotune and this is kind of hot. No ID is on the boards and it is an uncharacteristically blippy beat for the Resurrection architect. What he lost his copy of Power of Zeus?

So, I’ve been gone for a few days. Has anyone heard The Carter 3? Why is nobody talking about it on the internet?

its weird, but old charles sounds like one of the kids from your lunchroom cipher in high school, somewhat horrible yet still charming, can’t help you with the Carter 3 though….

  5. david Says:

nerd/skater/regular rap is nothing new…its been around forever and it wasnt a hit in the 80s and it aint gonna last in the 08s trend, fad, flash in the pan, call it what u want…the rap game is wide open for hard lyrics to dominate again

  6. Grimey Says:

i like how the asian dudes name is Taro and it just makes no fucking sense to him…. hahaha bubble tea anyone?

  7. Maurice Garland Says:

youve got to find a check writer to furnish you a trip to Atlanta so you can see cats like Spree live.

  8. Tray Says:

I assume the bit about C3 was sarcastic, but actually I’ve yet to see any credible blogger do a writeup. In particular, Breihan’s rapturous review is yet to drop. I actually haven’t heard it yet, though I did check out “Mr. Carter” – a decent song, but not even seeing Black Republicans as far as hyped duets go.

  9. The Publics Says:

Maybe keeping your government name has something to do with building up your net persona – so that you can transfer back and forth between rap music, mogul moves, and blog fame without confusing fans and potential sponsors.

fuck this song sucks. I’m listening to it right now…jesus christ.

    blame heron preston.

  10. slurg Says:

    >Should I thank Kanye West for this?

I think you should thank Keith Murray or Erick Sermon !

  11. ANU Says:

jokaman is a really good rapper.
I never heard spark dawg & k reata before, but they pretty good too.

  12. ANU Says:

i know it’s not sega but come on now…best video game rap ever. even the sound effects are on point

  14. vital24 Says:

No one is talking about ‘Carter 3′ on the internet because Lil Wayne is not as dope as you blog dudes think, he is mad overrated plus no one cares…I saw the same shit in the late eighties its called new jack swing, Lil Wayne will come and go and not receive any real propers from the kids who know. As for Del he’s never been afraid to experiment with styles and go against the grain…don’t sleep on ‘the eleventh hour’ for all new school jerks that think hip hop started in the south think again. Out!

  15. rkm Says:

Wow, that first one is so bad I only made it one minute deep. The second one has good verses, especially considering that’s such a strange beat to rhyme over, but how did someone like No ID decide to use a cartoon children after helium chorus, my ears burn every time it comes on.

  16. noz Says:

Dre or not, that other Hamilton track is pretty good.

Though I still cringe when rappers say the word blog.

  17. noz Says:

    “credible blogger”

    LOL

  18. Tray Says:

Well, you’re sort of credible. I didn’t mean to imply Breihan was. Decent writer though.

  19. no cocaine just blunts (& hip hop tapes) Says:

so did wayne orchestrate the death of “static major” to help boost record sales?

  20. walkmasterflex Says:

no one’s talking about the carter 3 because a) it seems to be harder to find than the typical megahyped leaked release, b) the track ordering (at least of the version i have) differs somewhat from the official tracklistings i’ve seen, and/or c) it’s so weird no one seems to be able to make heads or tails of it, really

  21. jump Says:

“so did wayne orchestrate the death of “static major” to help boost record sales?”

    not funny.

  22. Tray Says:

It is kind of an unfortunate way to go out on mr. major’s part. I wouldn’t want people to remember me for Lollipop.

  23. billions Says:

‘The Carter III: Throw Some AutoTune On It’ is better than I thought upon first listen. I was feeling it more the 2nd and 3rd times… The bangers for me are ‘3peat,’ ‘A Milli,’ ‘Dr. Carter,’ ‘La La,’ ‘Nothin on me’ (with Fabolous actually coming through with a good verse… Weird for the ‘08! What’s with that dude that makes me not want to like him? Is it that insecurrr lilt he adds in his voice as his gimmick? Like he sounds like he’s in trouble for throwing the baseball through the window?), ‘Tie My Hands’ and ‘Misunderstood’ get moody and it helps the album… The ‘Lollipop’ remix on this album has dude who produced the dime-a-dozen beat is all over it telling us how we should pay him to make us a hit… I bet he’s at parties saying ‘I did the Lollipop remix’ and then he hopes everyone assumes he’s talking about the GOOD one with Kanye, not this lame one. We see you dude.

Anyway, my favorite line on there right now is the adlib during ‘Shoot Me Down’: “I swear this tea is at a real good temperature right now…”

  24. Mr. Rogers Says:

I thought Charles Hamilton was from Harlem?

  25. Slizzard Says:

DJ Jubilee & KC Redd “do the mario” & all those crank songs, notably “do the yoshi on em”

  26. drug references in all caps Says:

benefits’ mario rap is still the all time classic.

and yo that parappa the rappa album was bangin

  27. sherm lillies Says:

ps the del song is hot fiyah

  28. cmcv Says:

carter three is dope. dope beats

  29. Stunt Says:

I’m just going to assume that the above commenter shitting on Chops has some sort of a learning disability, and probably like the last two Common records.

  30. DRE DOLLARS Says:

Yo you heard Charles Hamilton diss Lupe Fiasco a couple times on his mixtape?? Hahaha…peep game
