Monkey Bites On Yo’ Sister’s Neck

M.C. Big Boy – “I’m Married to My Mic
from I’m Married To My Mic 12″ (Go-Go USA, 198?)

Some Capital City cheese. MC Big Boy sounds like he ripped a page from Cool J’s rhyme book. But if we’re to believe his word, it was he who taught LL how to rock the bells. That’s some Gillie Da Kid revisionist bullshit, if I’ve ever heard it. When did it become cool for Daniel-son to diss Mr. Miyagi?

As you might’ve guessed, Go-Go USA mostly put out Go-Go records. This is not one of them.

Dungeon Rats On Your Gadamn Ass

df.jpg
Cool Breeze f/ Dungeon Family – “Watch For The Hook (Vibes MIx)
from Watch For The Hook CDEP (Organized Noize, 2000)
Slimm Cutta Calhoun f/ Big Boi – “Why Ya Smilin’
from The Skinny Promo (Aquemini, 2001)
E-40 f/ Big Boi & Big Gipp – “Ham Sammiches & Coup Devilles
from Loyalty & Betrayal Promo CD (Jive, 2000)

I just did this huge Dungeon Fam Retrospective up on XXL. So as you might have guessed, I’ve been knee deep in the Dungeon catalog over the past few days, to the point where I was calling a confused Mama Noz to dig my Lil’ Will CD out of the closet (“i see lil’ wayne, lil’ flip, lil’ keke, lil’ kim, lil’ sin, but no lil’… what did you say – lil’ nilly?“) and then explaining to her how to rip and send email an mp3. A daunting task, as you might’ve guessed.  But it’s appreciated, ma.

Anyway, these are a few interesting DF loosies that I encountered along the way:

First up is a CD only remix of “Watch For The Hook.” While the beat isn’t touching the original, it is pretty interesting because the original mix censored was entirely censored, presumably at Breeze’s request. Here we can finally learn that Gipp laid it down hard (ayo!) more than one damn time.

“Why Ya Smilin’” is just a cut that got left off of the retail version of Slimm Calhoun’s debut The Skinny for some odd reason. I don’t even think I have this album anymore, but I strangely still have this mp3. If I recall the album does have it’s moments, and might be worth of dollar bin coppage.

“Ham Sammiches” is a repost of an all time CB favorite. Read more here.

Penthouse Players Clique – “Droppen Bombs
from They Don’t Know 12″ (Alias Records, 1990)

I’m on my LA shit.

Penthouse Players Clique consisted of MCs Playa Hamm and Tweed Cadillac and the legendary DJ Quik. I told you before how their first and only LP, Paid The Cost… was one of many in a long line of classic and shamefully out of print extra-NWA Ruthless releases. But before signing with Mr, Rourke and Tattoo (just playing… RIP Eazy), PPC released this, their first 12″ on Alias records. The A-Side, “They Don’t Know” turned up as a bonus cut on Paid The Cost, but as far as I know “Droppen’(sp) Bombs” is otherwise unreleased. It catches crew before they smoothed out their style on the pimp tip, instead kicking some of that “fast rap” madness that the kids love these days.

Well… replace “kids” with “35 year old overseas ebay bidders” and “love” with “desire.”

“Fadanuf…” Fa Erybody

Just a quick heads up – Rap-a-Lot has finally not given Odd Squad’s (Devin The Dude, Jugg Mugg & Rob Quest) classic album Fadanuf Fa Erybody the reissue treatment. Bad news for the ebay slangers, good news for everybody else. Bad news for everybody – it’s only a chopped and screwed version of the album, not a reissue of the original release. Legend has it that Scarface considers this the labels best release. I don’t know if I completely agree with that assessment, but it’s pretty damn great and you should own it. Now somebody tell Lil’ J to bring The Convicts, Big Mello, Ganksta Nip and The Terrorists back to stores. And I’m not talking about half assed chopped and screwed versions either.

In related news, word is that the recently reunited Terrorists are about to sign with Rap-A-Lot for the release of a new album.
